i am looking at buying a '88 bronco 4wd with a 302. the trans is slipping and before i buy it i want to know what it will cost to replace but dont know what trans it is can anyone help?
The only overdrive automatic transmission available at that time was the AOD and it could be as simple as a misaligned TV (throttle valve) cable. If it is out of adjustment the shift parameters get goofy in a heartbeat.
The TV cable is unique to the AOD. It is a mechanical shift control link that runs between the throttle valve linkage and a corresponding external control arm on the AOD trans.

i thought the 4r70w was just a version of the AOD?
I am unaware of the applications that the 4r70w can be found in so I'm am ill equipped to accurately answer that question. I know the AOD to be an over drive-equipped variant of the C4 automatic.

When the E4OD was introduced it was an all new case & power train much stronger than a C6. All the autos we have now are derivative of the E4OD.
Sorry to the OP we got off topic a bit.
by the time I got back down there to look at it, it was gone. but I found another one '89 4x4 with a four speed and overdrive but third gear is going. any thoughts on that?
I yield to the better knowledge but argue with the assumption that the E4OD was stronger than ANYTHING. Behind diesels they are a constant source of problem and behind gas engines they spill their hydraulic pump guts into the torque converter between 80 and 100k. (I've personally dealt with this on five separate occasions).
rickybobby,
Any auto with ONE gear dying is suspicious in my mind. If the whole thing is slipping or shifts erratically there are things you can do to service it. But a single gear with a problem in an automatic sounds like a user-related "fup".
