Are there any real, independent tests of any of these? I've never been into additives but clean injectors are a real issue we all have to deal with.
I pulled injectors off of my Bronco to clean, soaked some in carb cleaner (old fashioned bucket), some in STP and some in something else (forget what it was).. the carb cleaner turned a dirty brown color, the other two stayed perfectly clear.. since then, I've been sort of against fuel injector cleaners.
Recently I wanted to try cleaning my IAC again, so I pulled it and soaked it in Lucas (everyone swears by this stuff).. the dirt stayed, the same stuff that a spray carb cleaner and/or throttle body cleaner takes right off.
I also tried soaking a dirty, oily carbon'd bolt in Seafoam once and it didn't even loosen the oil, but never did try it on gas stuff.
So anyways, are there any real tests so I can find out what really works?
edit: I also understand some of this stuff may need (in theory?) to be under pressure, heated or vaporized to work.
ErrorS, injector cleaners work, but only if you kept a maintenance schedule that included a bottle at least every 7000mi. If you haven't, it could work, but it could also screw you, by sending a big clog down the injector, so if you never used them and are planning on doing so, have your injectors cleaned profesionally before you start the treatment.
I personally use Lucas in every EFI vehicle I own including the 4 year-old direct injected, VVT, DOHC, inter-cooled turbo in my Sky. Yes, shoot me I bought a GM. Its the ONLY product I've ever used that I can actually tell when the engine begins to pull it through the combustion cycle.
