hey guys I read some posts that the EPBV can cause poor fuel mileage. I read on Guzzles site how to clean it and everything which I plan on doing.
I was just wondering how something like that could effect mileage?? Since the winter started I noticed a drop from 17 to 13. When I was getting 17 the truck was fully stock then I put a 6637, muffler delete and zoodad which was suppose to improve mileage but my mileage has dropped big time. Just a thought it could be the EPBV not really sure though
Well to start off, I may have a boost leak but not to sure. I dont feel a power loss or anything but I could be wrong on this, I do see oil forming around the Plenum boots. I was going to clean the tube and possibly change the sensor but how long should the epbv stay closed? Until the truck is fully warm or near it?
Another question about the EPBV is, I have the bullydog 6 position chip with high idle. Now if I start the truck and flip it to high idle the epbv opens, closes, opens, closes, opens, closes. You pretty much here woosh, exhaust, woosh, exhaust. (sorry for the 1st grade lingo) but when the truck is driving its either open or closed.
Once I put the mods on the truck of course I toyed with it a few times ahhhaha now with the loud exhaust and everything haha but I drive normal. Im on the highway or in town. I run with the chip in the stock position all the time. I used to get 430 miles with a 1/4 tank left now I get 340 with a 1/4 tank left. I also run power service in the white bottle.
(maybe Im worrying about nothing and should see how it is come spring??)
Its not a good idea to flip on the high idle when your just starting your truck. I recall seeing that around here before. Let the truck warm up naturally with the EBPV doing its job, allowing the motor to warm up then after, using the high idle. As far as the mileage, winter blend here too and suffering MPG'S too. I see a CCV mod in your future if you want to eliminate those oily boots and crud..
I dont start the truck with the switch in the high idle. I start the truck let idle for a minute or two and then switch it on. I have the orings and hoses for the CCV mod but never got around to putting it on. I also dont know if I want a trap on the end or just have it vent to atmosphere.
I guess ill have to see how mpgs are during the spring.
I have a trap on mine. It helps keep the smell down a little bit. I used to just let it vent without a trap. Noticed a pretty big difference when I added the "trap" filter. I have mine laying on the side so it filters, but naturally drains. Its a rigged job, but it works for me.
Hey guys Friday night when I was just getting ready to leave my shop I started my truck in the shop where its usually parked and brought it outside (this is all in stock position on the bully dog chip) I was just talking with my buddy and heard the epbv engage, disengage, engage, disengage, engage, disengage. Also the truck brought the rpms up a little bit and it was still doing it until finally the epbv finally stayed engaged. I didnt touch while this was happening. I know Im sounding like a pain in the a$$ but not to sure why it does that and then sometimes it will just engage.
I have the same chip your running, don't kick it to high idle first start in the morning. The truck should idle up on it's own after a couple minutes when its cold, and it will hold high idle until the engine is fully warmed. If you get it before it's fully warmed it will drop to normal idle as soon as you touch the brake or accelerator. I leave my chip in the 50 setting pretty much all the time. I noticed a very slight drop in MPG versus stock, maybe 1mpg. Like you I normally get around 450 with a quarter tank left, but since the winter diesel has come around that has dropped to around 420. I only use the high idle setting once the truck has been warmed up and I plan to let it idle for 10min or more.
edit: I also did the CCV delete and installed new orings. I ran a vent line all the way to behind the fuel tank at the end of the bed and I don't get much smell from it at all. When I got the truck it was venting into the engine bay and that caused terrible smell and nasty oil residue all over the bay, as well as a small condensation drip on the ground after running for a while.
Why is it that you cant run the high idle after start up and having the truck idle for a couple of minutes. Now I dont let the truck warm up fully in the morning before driving. Since the truck is plugged in its slightly warm then I let idle for a little bit just to bring up the temp then drive easy on it since I drive backroads before the highway. I used to get 430 with a 1/4 now its down to 340 alot more then yours. After reading some other posts other people have replaced the injector orings but not sure if that would help mpg.
Do you have a picture of your CCV set up? And what did you use to block off the tube on the intake?

Watching thread with interest!! I'm in the same boat here, since my mods I've lost maybe 4-5mpg (mods being 4" Turbo back bully, 6637, Edge Evo II)
This is how the PO had the CCV vented when I got the truck.
When I pulled the doghouse off I found the o-rings were toast.
replaced with new ones.
cleaned up the doghouse.
reinstalled.
Then I ran the vent line up over the master so it will drain back into the CCV.
then I brought it down to the frame rail, and ran it back towards the rear of the bed inside the frame rail.
I stopped the line under the fuel tank in the skid plate, making sure the whole line had a slight downward angle so it wouldn't plug up.
I used 4" tubing to replace the the tube the CCV used to vent into the turbo. This was also needed to install my 6637.
I don't use the Bully high idle because I think it's bad to force high idle before oil gets circulated up to the heads. I figure Ford designed the ECU to activate high idle on cold starts after a delay for a reason. It only takes about 2min for the factory high idle to kick in, not saving much time by forcing it right when you start it.
