Thanks Tony. That was a sad day. I still picture that race in my mind, with Dale blocking for MW and Dale Jr. When he hit the wall I said _ _ _ _ he's dead. Really bothers me that I was right. There was a lot of good that Dale did that we didn't know about.

There sure was,the priest at his church said when Dale gave him the money to pave the parking lot,he said to the priest if you tell anyone I did this I'll come down here and rip it up myself. The priest was laughing
He was really a great guy,he just wanted to keep up the intimidator reputation for the media.
Great recollection Tony, I think it's been 10 years since that fatal accident, I was a Dale fan then & I still am, I only have one sticker on my back window & it's the #3. May he rest in peace.
I heard from a guy that I know that was around NASCAR in the 70s & 80s & what killed Dale was not what was reported. That Dale use to have a habit of loosening his harness on the last lap, & that is what actually killed him. Had they of been tight he may of still been with us.
I'm always amazed at how angry Dale Sr fans get when you talk Kyle Busch. Remember Dale Sr never won a Daytona 500 until the end. Yes he won but Kyle is close to what Dale was. Dale was not a clean driver & he rode what he had under him, he could be arrogate. He would go after guys. All things that Kyle gets booed for.
I always wonder if NASCAR would be as cookie cutter as it is today if Dale Sr was alive. I think NASCAR has gone down hill since Dales death. To the point I quit watching it. There is nothing about it that represents Stock Car racing. They have taken all the skill of finding an edge & winning until the others figured it out. Now it is not who is good but who has the most money. Right now Rick Hendrix is the top in that dept. About half the races or more when I quit watching were ended in yellow, white, & green. They can't race anymore, when they do NASCAR throws some flag to group up the field.
I wonder what Dale Sr is saying about the sport he gave his life for today.
I believe there is decent truth in what he is trying to say, but in this case I don't think that it needs to be a point or need to be used to try to promote Kyle, although I like Kyle or at least his talent. I've heard several stories after his death of things that he did for people, some that he didn't know and didn't ask and in many cases made clear he didn't want it known that he had. Kind of a hard man to figure out, but I think the last few years he was starting to mellow out a little. I do agree though that had he lived Nascar would probably be different than it is now.

Although that might be true, alot of people are alive & NASCAR keeps marching forward, we will never know what Dale & where Dale Jr might be if........
I have both the "DALE" and the movie "3" that came out. "DALE" was a boxed set, with treasured footage of his most famous races looking like they did when the footage was aired on TV without the commercials.
It sent me on a long trip back into the past, when my Poppa and I watched races together......
Racing was one of the things we had in common, we both loved it.
You should do what you can to collect footage of the races Dale Senior ran - they are priceless.
I don't remember what I was doing when Dale hit that wall - but I remember feeling as if I had been kicked in the guts. We either lost a great man, or it was time for him to move on. I wonder what car God has him driving?
By the way: NASCAR WAS changed by that. Safety collars were added.....
I suppose the bottom line is THAT'S RACING
And nobody really has a good answer for the one thing at the bottom of it all - WHY DO WE DO IT?
The only answer I have ever seen that makes any sense is because we can....
And people will always try to go farther, faster, and better than ever before
I've been a race fan since 1989 so, I'll say this. Kyle Bush is one of the most talented guys on the track, the kid can drive a car.The difference between him and Earnhardt is. Dale Sr. would wreck yah but then he'd go talk to yah after the race to see if you were ok. He was also able to tell NASCAR that they need to change something and they would do it and listen to him.
Kyle needs to grow up and stop flipping out on the media and the other drivers because something doesn't go his way. If he stopped doing that,he'd gain more respect.
I think this past season was one of the best I've seen in the past 5 years. The double file restart rocks. Clint Bowyer should have ended up way better than he did point wise this season. That quarter panel call up at Louden was bogus, and there were a couple of races when he was leading with 17 ta go and the fake caution came out, killing the lead he had.
The fake cautions have to stop, let the chips fall where they may.
Maybe these fake cautions are "TV time outs". I kind of stopped watching this year after one station would -it seemed- show 1 minute of racing and 4 mins of commercials. I was in VA when Dale died. A lot of the NC papers all had stories about all the unknown good he did. From making mortgage payments to buying a car. All for people in need. He was one of those who really gave back to the community.
