Hey everyone. I bought a 96 Econoline 350 7.3L Ambulance for peanuts last spring and after many Illinois winters the body is starting to look like swiss cheese. The 7.3 runs so well and has never given me any trouble. Myself as well as all my neighbors are just tired of seeing a damn ambulance in the driveway all the time. This thing isn't worth enough to get rid of, and I really want to hang onto the motor and trans. Will this year engine work in a 7.3 SD or Excursion? I'm looking to buy one dirt *** cheap with a blown PSD (not easy to find, I know) or maybe even try to stuff the whole ambulance engine and trans into a gasser Excursion. (the e4od shifts perfectly, but heard conflicting reports regarding fitment) This isn't my DD and I only use it to tow my boat mostly. Pretty sick of rolling up to the boat launch in an ambulance. Thoughts?
You can do it with a gasser too.
but if you want an SD it will be easier to buy one that had a PSD.
but if you find an OBS, you can just start swapping stuff easy.
I think you need to change out the dash harness.
Thats why I say it would be a bit harder with a SD.
Swap fuel tanks too.
Excellent. Are the blocks identical as far as mount locations, etc? Does anyone know if the e4od mounts match that of the 4r100 found in the Excursion? This is a 2wd van, could I use the trans in a 4wd Excursion? I ask because there's a cheap-ish 4x4 v10 Ex near me with almost 300k on it and it's begging for the swap. This swap may be more involved than I want though, mainly concerned with how much wiring harness crap I would have to buy. Dashboard swaps aren't a big deal for me. I just don't want to burn up my bank account on every little relay, etc that I will need to buy.
What I would do is get the Excursion and gut it of the wiring harness etc. Then put the OBS harness in it. That would be the cheapest way.
The easiest way would be to get one that has/had a psd in it. Alot of differences in gas vs. diesel.
If you want 4 wd then you have some more thinking and decision making to do. Personally what I would do in your case is get a divorced transfer case, put it behind that e4od and rebuild you some new driveshafts. Problem solved.
That way you will be running with everything you already have and the onky thing you need to add is the TC. Otherwise you need to try to find a stock TC. I am unsure if you 2wd tranny will bolt up to a tc. I do know that if you get a new tailshaft for the tranny you caould then bolt up a stock TC. Problem solved again.

I like this idea. Excursions are cheap around here and typically in way better shape than their F-series counterparts. 4WD is looking too expensive and complicated for this build. Hopefully the engine and trans from the vanbulance will bolt right in place and I can make the harness work without too much cutting of wires, etc. My county is far enough away from Chicago that there's no sort of emissions testing, etc, so that is not a concern. Now I just need to find a rust free 2WD Excursion. The PSD all seem too expensive, regardless of what shape the engine is in. This may become the v10 to 7.3 swap from hell, but I hope not.
You're better off finding a PDS or Ex with a blown 7.3 if you can. That way you could use the 4wd if you find one, plus you'll get all the bolt on upgrades you can steal off the blown engine. Intercooler, 17 ded HPOP, larger intake plenums, move to the SD turbo and pedestal and get the cheaper bellowed up pipes, electric fuel.
If you find a V-10 model, the 4R100 that came with the V10 will not work with a 7.3. It's a weaker tranny so you'd have to use the E4OD, but a 4x4 diesel you could just use that 4R100 and keep the 4wd set up.
