NEED HELP!
I got a 2002 mountaineer that is making a whistling/ whining noise that sounds like its coming from the front half of the vehicle but i can pin point where it is..... i noticed at first that it would only do it at hwy speed 65-70 mph and onlyif you were holding a steady pace or using the cruise controle now its doint it at 45mp and up. i know these had crappy transmissions and i am wandering anyone has had this problem either with there mountaineer or explorer mine is the v6 .... also the transmission seems to to be working fine shiftsare firm so i dk what it could be if you had this probelm let me know what you found out

Our 03 mountaineer was doing that and it was the torque converter. When I had it changed I had the shop also rebuild the transmission while it was out. It had 100k on it and if a torque converter has gone bad the chances are high that pieces of it are floating in the fluid, and eventually will take out the transmission. We had bought ours used so I had no idea how long it had been whining so I did go the extra mile. You may get away with just a new converter and a good flush.
On another note I would check the front wheel bearings also as they do the same thing and will get much worse with more mileage.

SSFD, does the noise sound different than a worn wheel bearing (common)? From your description this sounds like the symptoms for a failing bearing and I'd hate for you to dump a bunch of money into a transmission rebuild for a bad wheel bearing.
