Hi everybody! This is my first post here, but I've been reading this forum for a while now. I have a new-to-me 86 F150 with a 302 and AOD. This morning, when I got home from work, I got back in it to leave again and it did not start. I jumped the starter solenoid, but that didn't start it either. The starter solenoid was clicking, and then smoke started coming from both of the battery terminals. I let the truck cool down for a couple of hours, but it still won't start. Now when I turn the key, it just makes a loud whining noise. It doesn't sound like the starter motor is turning, and the engine is not turning over. Any ideas on what I need to fix now?
starter is bad. mine does that too- spins without turning over the engine. if i tap mine with a tire tool it will go. bad thing is i just replaced it with a rebuild not 2 years ago for the same reason. warranty is only for 1 year, though.
yeah, isnt it the bendix in the starter but you have to replce the whole thing.ive bout starters with lifetime warrentys, cost a good bit more, but if starters are a problem for that certain auto, its worth it. .i had a friend with a Z-28,he would tap on the starter with a tire tool when it did that, worked for a long time, till i had it for the day,he had to come get me with his bosses wrecker from like 30 miles away,OOPS
But ,autozone will test it for free,so dont jus buy one b4 testin.and if theres another place handy that tests them,i would get a second oppinion, had an idiot tell me my alternator was bad,he didnt have the machine hooked up right,my alt was fine!
thanks for the info. i pulled it off, and hooked it up straight to the battery. it was all locked up. $50 and 10 minutes later, the truck started right up like a champ!
Had the a similar thing happen to my '94 5.0 about a month ago. Stopped to get gas and when I got back in the truck and turned the key, all I could hear was the solenoid engaging- no motor turning. I know my batt. and cables/conn. are good so I had it towed home (fortunately only a couple miles). Pulled the starter apart, and other than the fact it was really dirty inside I couldn't find anything wrong. Cleaned it and lubed the drive and it's been working fine since.
