I'm looking at a 2005 FX4 p/u with a 5.4. Been looking around this forum about this model and ya'll are scaring me about this engine. It's low mileage, little over 26,000 miles and the price is right. It's listed on autotrader and the dealership has a free carfax with it which shows no problems and only service record shows is "maintenance".
So what's the scoop? When and if I go look at this truck what do I need to look for concerning engine prbblems?
What about this model in general, what's the difference between a FX4 and a XLT?
The 5.4 engine is an awesome engine but there are a few issues to be aware of. One the cam phasers in the 04-06's had problems and would create a ticking noise. This is something you might end up dealing with. Two, the spark plugs are a royal pain in the *** but its nothing to worry about because there is a tool to help with that. Other then that the problems are minor usually and the truck will run for years.
The difference between the XLT and Fx4 is mainly cosmetic. The interior is laided out different in that the Fx4 has a center console with captains chairs and the XLT has an arm rest with bench seat. There is also some skid plates on the Fx4 as it is made a bit more rugged to take the trails more.
Thanks for your reply. The cam phasers, is this something that has been covered by a recall? Is this something that straightforward to replace? How do I know if they are bad; is this the "pinging" that has been referred to here?
And when you refer to the plugs, is there some issue, or just a pain to change them?
OK the cam phasers are not covered by a recall and its one of those jobs you better be handy with a wrench to do or have done at a shop. You have to do some work under the hood to get them out not something I would try. Its not a pinging noise it is more like a ticking noise and it gets louder the worse they become.
The plugs are a two piece design and seize up inside the holes so they tend to break. Its not the end of the world but a pain to remove and you need a special tool that you can pick up at the local Napa store.
