Hi guys, I lurk alot, post infrequently, but i have a major problem. My 79 F100 need a transmission. For a while it was leaking alot of fluid when it was ruinning, actually it was slinging it everywhere, and finally i let it run too low and killed it. My fault I know. Well now i need to replace it and I am wanting to know how much trouble it is going to be? what should I look out for and what should be the toughest part? I am buying the transmission used so what should i look for there other than fluid smell and color? How much Fluid does it need, when i put it back in? what about the tourque converter and flexplate? will I need to replace them?
First off we need more info on your truck. Is it 2 or 4WD? 2WD is definately easier to work on. Did you ever find the problem that caused the leak? Was it actually leaking from the transmission or maybe from a line or cooler. You need to make sure nothing like this was the cause of your transmission failure or you will wind up burning up another one. If the transmission you replace yours with is the same you should not have any need to replace the flexplate. Torque converter may be a different story though. If you ran the other tranny low there is the possibility that the converter was damaged. But I don't know if this is definate. If you are getting a tranny from a salvage yard they will usually give you a 30 day warranty. If they don't, I would choose another place to get a transmission from. They should give you the torque converter that goes with the tranny. When time comes and you have your replacement it may not be a bad idea to replace the filter and adjust the bands. These are both easy and inexpensive measures to take if you have any mechanical experience. In the end, how much fluid the tranny will take depends.
