I have an 04 that I bought new. Now I have a rough idle and it has stalled on me 4 times. Only stalls at low speeds with no throttle, parking lot, and a stop light.
I think its time to change the plugs. I have 75K on the clock. I have called several places and the going rate seems to be 500+ 100 for each broken plug.
I am a pretty handy person and can buy the tool and plugs for about $100. My question is this, is it worth the effort? I don't get much JOY from wrenching on things, but times are tough. How hard is it really? I have changed head gaskets on commercial lawn mowers and maintain them on a regular basis so I understand things. I just don't want to spend 10hrs messing with this thing if I end up towing it and having to pay anyway. I would say my mechanic skills are a 6-7 on a scale of 10.
My truck is going in tomorrow to have the cam phasers replaced and we will have the plugs at the same time replaced. There is NO WAY I would concider doing it myself!! If one of them bottom bits goes in to your head....your done for mate! That 800 or so bucks will turn into 3k in a heartbeat!
is it throwing any codes? get them pulled at autozone or your parts store of choice. I doubt its a plug problem, 4 or more would have t0 completely foul out for it to die like that
I changed the plugs on my 05 5.4 at 100,000 miles and had no problems at all. Heard so many horror stories about dealerships using air ratchets and just jamming the plugs in the holes and cross threading them that I decided to do it myself. Granted it wasn't he easiest set of plugs I've changed but not that bad either. Biggest thing is make sure you use tourque wrench on install, alumium heads so you want to make sure you don't over tighten.
05 ford starting using nickle anti-seize on the plug shield, in an effort to reduce breakage/seperation. 04 did not get that treatment and ford issued tsbs relating to the problem. I had an 04 fx4 with the 5.4 3 valve engine. i changed out my plugs at 47k i broke one and was able to remove the piece. longgggg story
Im thinking like the other poster with on 70some thousand its probably not your plugs..could be but im not thinking so. ive read where some folks got upwards 120k on original plugs. you would be smart to have diagnostics done. too many other things it could be to go through the trouble of plug change. my 2cents
When I originally bought my truck it had a misfire to it under heavy acceleration in gear. It got worse. I finally got the plugs changed out. Runs great now. I had 131k. 7 out of 8 broke. The truck would idle fine, and not miss at all. I'd say you may have another issue.
Its at the dealership right now having the diagnostic done. I will know something later today. I just don't want to spend $500-1000 and still have the same problem I have now.
