Project Black Sheep

I know most of you guys dont know who I am but I figured I would share some info on a new project that I am starting. Its called Black Sheep because it doesnt really fit in well with my current fleet of vehicles. The reason it doesnt fit is becase it isnt from the FoMoCo brand but is still from Detroit. I picked her up for $800 and she needs some work on the engine but the body is in overall good condition for the age... and now the pic:

its an 86 half ton rolling on 38s. it ahs a 350 in it with a turbo 350 behind it. the bed is in great condition. Just figured I would share and get your guys opinions plus I will post more pics when I get her home this weekend and in the garage.

I have an 83 K20 at my parents house that I need to get rolling on again. It was my first truck, I sank a bunch of money and time into it only to let some stupid girl ruin it for me by giving me the honor of t-boning her POS car. Those old Chevy's are good trucks, the last of the real trucks made by GM!

I have a bone-stock '83 GMC 2500 with a 7' 6" Western plow on it. This truck has (for options) only 4x4 and dual fuel tanks. As far as quality and design, it's pretty wretched, IMO, but it sure plows the snow. It's in decent shape, has 120K, and I replaced the factory engine after is threw 3 piston rods while plowing. The best part of the truck is the SM465 manual trans. - what a great feature. Oddly, the frame isn't cracked by the steering box, but you can see it flex a lot when you move the steering wheel while stopped.

I agree that this is the last truck series GM made that was really made more-or-less like a truck. Super low parts prices make it a good truck to restore/fix/rehab. $49 front fenders, and $10 heater cores.

If this truck blows the engine again, I will probably junk it. To me, the 350 V8 is the weak link. An regular cab Cummins or Super Duty would make a great plow truck.

My plow truck is a 76 Chevy K10 with a 7'6" Meyers power lift/angle plow. I bought it from the original owner, I think it has less than 100k miles on it, the only options are full time 4x4 and an auto trans. Its rusted, busted, dented and beat down, but I picked it up with the plow, a nearly brand new GM Goodwrench 350 crate motor, built trans, and good tires for $500 in December of 08.

That's a find, a neighbor of mine picked up an 80 shortbed 2wd for $1800. It had a busted 305 in it and a junk 400 that wasn't wired right. He bought it because it had a supposed good 350 in it. I told him he payed to much.

Well he's happy now, it's got a built 350 with a good sized cam, headers, new intake and carb and we made the 400 into a corvette trans and properly wired everything. Even converted it to dual electric fans with a thermoswitch and an overide in case it messes up he can turn them on manually.

with chase

Funny, i am with chase on this one, I have a 78 with factory crate motor with only 500 miles sitting down by barn, i really need to get after it. PO put the motor in, then dropped front drive shaft and litterally exploded the tranny and xfer case when the shaft dug into the pavement. I have the tranny and xfer case in the barn, just need to get MOTIVATED. Into the whole project 750 bucks.

I had a 76 chevy heavy half 4x4 as my first truck in 85, by the time i sold it in 91 i had a 305 stock buolt engine, a 327 with 202 heads, 650 holley, perfect rv cam setup in it, a 350 essentially stock engine other than mild cam, a 383 stroker that never did seem to get running right, and a stock 400 all sitting on engine stands. Would swap them in and out what seemed like every other weekend, hour out, 2 in was typical. So simple, miss the old days sometimes. Had an 80 chevy short box after that, was a great huntin rig when i was in elko, at leat until i got my 95 chevy, seemed so "modern" at the time, gave up on the old ones till two years ago with current project.

Hoping to do alot of it with my daughter, just a basic vehicle is a great place to teach her alot on how things work in a car I think, essentially air and fuel, with some power to get it rolling. Shes just 12 now, and still thinks I know a few things, need to get her on this with me this summer before she becomes a teenager and i don't know anything :s
