Hey guys my truck started surgin the other night coming home from work really bad, the voltage guage on the dash jumps around a lot and the headlights flash almost nonstop, could it me something simple like the voltage regulator needs swapped? the alternator is only a couple months old so i doubt it's that, it also has started doing the power surge thing like when there is an air intrusion lately to, i dunno if they are related or not but hopefully one of you guys will know, any help would be greatly appreciated
92 is internally regulated correct? More than likely the brushes are shot in the alternator. I'd suspect alt. and end up swapping it for a rebuild or new one. You could remove the alternator and disassemble and remove the brush holder to confirm. If you see one brush worn down to the copper lead, that's the problem.
The alternator is dang near brand new and the motor is out of an 84so no not internally regulated but i think im going to swap the regulator out anyways, only the cab is from 92
It would not be the first time some one got a brand new defective alternator. Most auto parts places can test all three and tell you which is bad. It is possible for any one of the three to go bad and cause either one of the others to have problems or even self destruct I had a ford wagon that the regulator went bad and killed the alternator 3 times before I discovered the bad regulator after replacing the regulator no more problems. Since these problems started after you replaced the alternator that is where I would start. Check all the electrical connections around the alternator to make sure there is not an intermittent connection that would also account for the surging voltage meter
