I have a 88 Idi but it has a 92 engine in it. I loaned it to a buddy to full a trailer and he said he turned th injection pump up but be actually messed with the "torque screw" now when I let off the throttle pedal it reins to die. Sometimes it actually dies die. It is VERY hard to start and leaks fuel from some unknown place. Does anyone have any idea what he Hell he did to my truck? That is the last time I loan my truck to anyone.
he might have tuned it all the way in or out. excessive black smoke at all? have you tried to adjust it back and see if that helps? theres someone here whos got a video on the torque screw adjusting. im sure it will show up soon... and ya, if you do loan it to a friend, loan it to someone with 0 mechanical know how. those people would never try to turn anything up but the radio.
There is more black smoke than before. I thought about turning it back but I don't know where it was to begun with. I never paid attention to it until he showed me what he messed with. Thanks for the idea. I am gonna look around for the video. I found one on YouTube but I didn't have time to watch it. Thanks again.
I watched the YouTube video and it is NOT the torque screw. It is the one below it and I have no idea which way it went or what that screw does. I think it was all the way in to start with but I'm not sure. I was going to just play with it and see what happens but I don't want to do any damage to my engine. Could you tell me what that screw does? Thanks in advance.
Well I finally got it figured out. I got the torque screw back where I belongs and I figured out why it was trying to die. I found a leaking fuel line. I fixed that and everything.
I would send your "buddy" the bill, that is completely BS, its not like ur adjusting the idle on a lawn mower. You cant just go around turning whatever screw you feel like. I borrowed my buddies 02 powerstroke with a shift on the fly edge programer and I didnt even turn it up out of respect for him.... and that would only take pressing one button........... He was nice enough to let me borrow it for the price of the fuel so theres no way I would f with it...... especially not like your "buddy" did.....
yeah i am all for helping a brother out, but that is complete garbage BS. I would definitely bill him for my time and any parts/labor. Could it have just been time for the line to start leaking....sure but you dont mess with another mans rig....period. No one borrows my truck unless i know them....very well. Even then though, i am probably still the one driving.
I lost my dad's '86 to someone borrowing my truck. He FIRST caught the turbo on fire...THEN he blew the head gasket while pushing the truck up a pass with a 14,500lbs load on her. Poor baby just coughs oil everwhere now, turbo is ok, had that tested just burned the paint and a breather line.
Definitely send him a bill and tack some extra for having to deal with the problems and frustration He created. Never lend him any thing more complicated than a steel ball unless you go along to supervise. the only other person who drives my truck is my wife and She only drives it if She can't avoid it .

Yep, learned my lesson on loaning the truck, NO one gets it now except my son, he's the designated driver for most trips.
It seems to always create problems, like when you ask for it back and the guy gets mad at you.
