sorry new to the diesels , so diesels make more torque than horsepower ? i figured 445 cu. in. hp would be around 350

Yes, diesels generally make more torque than horsepower. Diesel engines have a long stroke, which equates to more rotational force on the crank and more torque. With some modifications, they'll get up to the 350 range, but not from the factory.

HP = Torque * RPM / 5,252. Because these engines generally run at lower RPM's, the HP number's arn't huge relative to the engine displacement.

FWIW, my 96 is a CA model with split shot injectors- valve cover says 215 hp. My E99, with essentially the same setup (different turbo and IDM) said 250 on the valve cover.
Another important factor is the superduty came with an intercooler so factory could probably run a hotter tune.

Good point. Funny thing is... some of the E99 trucks (my old one included) said 250hp on the valve cover. Some E99's and the later trucks said 225hp. It seems like Ford/Navistar just liked to play around with the number they put on there to make people wonder.

Could be for different emissions requirements for the year. Like the OBS has a cat but the superduty didn't.

Isn't that the truth! When I had my 99 one of the doors got smashed in by someone and I put a new door on it. Even though all the holes for everything were identical, the bolts used to hold the speaker into the door were larger on the new door. WTF is that about? They didn't have anything better to do than that between model years?

Was that there reason when they had some engines bored to big for the pistons, they grabbed the metric bore drill? LOL.
