According to the paperwork given to me by the dealer, it states the following:

Customer states the service 4x4 light comes on when engaged (this is wrong, it's actually the Check 4x4 but whatever)

Misc replace valve assembly 81005 W94
Part # 6L3Z-9E441-A

Cause: Electronic 4x4 diagnostic P1867, C1010:13. Clear DTC and engauge/disengauge 4x4 5 times per SSM 21807. Code did not reoccur. Perform pinpoint test K for C1010:13. K1-Y, K19-Y, K20-Y, K21-N. Replace CVH solenoid. Retest. Pass.

An $18 solenoid was the cause of all this. I might have to buy an extra one just in case...

Sorry to hear this guys and I hope it all works out! I got my 2012 F350 with a manual 4x4 lever but we havn't had a flake of snow so I don't know if it works. I tried the E-Diff, it seems pretty cool. If it makes you guys feel any better, I can't locate any floor mats for the rubber carpet. It sounds like engaging the system, turning the truck off then turing it back on again might be the short term answer. I'll be sure to remember that trick should I encounter any problems. Thanks for the tip!

yep, I'm a fan of the manual transfer case myself, I've had two ESOF's and they both crapped out on me. I've had three manual transfer cases and no problems with those.
