exhaust

i am wondering what is a good way go when i comes to an exhaust for my truck. its a 92 351 4wd xcab sb.. i want a good throaty sound but dont want to lose much bottom end (if the 351 has any).. any opinions are appreciated.
note: i will not be wheeling this and it has 235's on it now. i plan on 31's at some point..

Not a 100% sure on your 5.8 but put dual exhaust no muffler on my 91 f150 5.0 and i left the cat, ran them both out on the passenger side just in front of the tire. I put 4 inch echo tips on it and if you want a deep throaty that sure did it for mine. Not loud and poppy one bit just a mean deep roar.

I dont have a small block but on my 89 F250 extended long bed I cut the cat, had dual 24" glass packs ran exiting on both sides behind the rear wheels at an angle with tips, they ran 2 1/4" pipe all teh way back, this allows me to keep my low end power. If you want to keep your low end, stay away from 3" pipe, that will kill your low end. As far as the air box, check out the thread that says "official 95 F250 build" in this forum, this guy has a lot of good ideas, he cut his air horns, kept the factory intake box, bored 3 holes in the bottom for additional air intake and raised the box a little. Good idea, I believe I will be doing that to mine when the weather gets a little nicer.
By the way, the sound on my truck is very nice, I never used to like glass packs but now I love them, they sound really good, good deep throaty sound, I especially like going under over passes and over bridges, makes it sound even better.

i had a 2000 with 2.5 duals out the back and you couldnt even talk at highway speed. i like the idea of SI/DO but im not sure if you lose anything with this setup. my 2000 lost bottom end with the duals.

Alot of info on this subject if you would like to do an advanced search.

I recommend Magnaflow mufflers.

300 I6/460 intake tube is an upgrade to the stock airbox.

The best advice I think anyone will give you on here is this, go to You tube and perform a search for different kinds of exhaust for the Ford 351, search magnaflow, glass packs, flow master, whatever your thinking about and you will get different sound clips to give you a good idea of the sound you want. Thats what I did before I had mine done, which is why I chose the set up I did. Exhaust sound is different for everybody, what one person likes the next one wont, this is the best way to get the sound you want without trial and error method.

on my '93 5.8 i got hedman shorty 50 state headers, stock y-pipe and magnaflow cat. no tailpipe or turndown. the exhaust probably ends right about the end of the extended cab. i think it's the best soundin ford i've ever heard (of course my opinion's a little biased). it's loud enough to hear, but quiet enough to have a convo while cruisin. it even runs smoother and picked up noticeable low end torque.

I suggest going with a 3 inch single with a Magnaflow and a high flow cat to replace the front cat. Get a single in dual out muffler is you want the look of duals. Thats what I did. You can hear mine in the link in my signature. If not just run a 3 inch single all the way back.

From my experience growing up in Maine, the cops were pukes about everything that had to do with modified trucks... Exhaust, lift, window tint, they were always cracking on my friends and I for the stuff we had done to our trucks... If I brought my truck back home now I would hate to think how long it would take for me to get pulled over..... Good luck with the exhaust and its always great to find a fellow "Mainer"

i do quite a bit of exhaust at work, i see a lot of guys going with a single in, dual out welded muffler, magnaflows, flowmasters, and the like, and running dual tails out the back. me personally, i ran true dual 2.5's, and welded IMCO mufflers on my 87 with the I6 (sounds crazy, right) ... but when i was finished, i discovered i didn't put the cats back on... so i need to take it back in for that.... i like the throaty sounds, and i've discovered that true duals with the right choice of pipe (2.25 or 2.5) when paired with the correct muffler will give you the results you are looking for ...
