Somewhere presumably on the shaft supporting the brake pedal is an electrical switch, hopefully with a slide-on connector to attach the wire to the switch.
At this point it would be useful to know what the resistance is between this wire and the chassis ground. If its close to zero ohms, you have a dead short somewhere, if its higher that would probably indicate corrosion. Cheap meters can be purchased for under ten bucks.
On the other hand, unless you've been off-roading or otherwise have made some mods recently, the problem is most likely some corrosion or obviously broken part in the brake lights themselves, which you can generally see once the lens is removed.
Another reasonable prospect would be the possibility that some movement in/around the brake pedal, has cut into and shorted the brake circuit wire.
