Should I do anything about this 'soft' code? I think I'll get a new IPR.
This is what you have :
DTC P0478 indicates an excessive back pressure condition existed during normal driving.
Possible causes:
stuck butterfly
restricted exhaust
plugged EBP sensor line
misadjusted EPR linkage
Talyn, how do you check the IPR harness with a meter? Any suggestions on where to buy a new IPR? I never asked Bob at Dieselsite if he had a new one. Yes, you are right about the surge, it wasn't a steady 3700. Bounced around between 3300 & 3700. I don't have bifocals yet, but soon! LOL To help me see it is why I moved it onto the steering column like Jose did. Its out of the sun glare and I can SEE it.
You'd have to disconnect the harness from the IPR and the part where it used to clip on the fuel bowl.
I'd personally take it out so you can wiggle the wires.
IPR harnesses are known to go bad.
Use an OHM meter to test for continuity.
Might have to have the wife help hold the leads into the plugs. Just set it to 100ohms or something. sometimes there is a sound mode, where when there is continuity, it will play a sound. if there is some breaks in the wire, the sound will go bad.
I'd say if you hear cackling in the sound, its probably a broken wire as well, but if your not holding the lead well it will cackle too.

Rick, butterfly elimated, 3 1/2" DP, 4" exhaust, wouldn't think that would be it. I don't know about the senor line, rusted and don't want to mess with it, no holes in it though. I unpluged IPR and had a no start, I'm going to buy a new one from Joey.

Tayln, pulled the harness and I have good continuity. I cleaned both plug ends and used that grease stuff. Also cleaned CPS plug and ICP plug. Drove normal about ten miles and no codes.
That sensor line rick is talking about can cause lots of issues.
You can take it out and let it read atmo, just plug the tube.
The sensor is detecting exhaust backpressure. If you let it read atmo, it might eliminate some of your issues. Especially if the tube is clogged with soot or what not.
I think i read one of the ways to clean the tube was with weed trimmer line, like a square piece of it where it can rub the soot out, and some brake cleaner.
But, Uh, don't quote me on that one. haha.
I thought none of that was even necessary with the ebpv deleted. I'm sure I read someone just unplugged the sensor and just left it that way. Remove the tube and plug the manifold. I remember this cause I took mine off to clean and stripped threads, replaced it all then was told I didn't need it cause of the deleted ebpv.
I would just unscrew the EBP sensor from the tube and take a few feet worth of baling wire and run it down the tube. If it is plugged, the wire will loosen up all the soot and unplug it...
I'll check it out Talyn and Darin, I remember that thread. Confused me, of course it doesn't take much to do that. lol Travis, that sounds like a 1st approach without breaking it off.
Today I pulled the P/S pump, leaking a lot. They had to order one for tomorrow but the reason I mention this is because I think its so cool that Auto Zone would lend me the tools (puller).
Friday we are leaving with the 5er for five days. I'm anxious to see how it will pull!! It would be a disaster if put into limp mode.
Yeah, we need to figure out why it's running 3700psi ICP. You cannot use more than 3000psi with your setup so there is no reason to have it. I'd try the IPR..

I sent Joey a email and haven't heard back from him on the IPR. I got half way thru the order on his web site and there wasn't a form to say I have a 96, so I emailed. Maybe my scan gauge is like Beans dyno, LOL!!

Sorry Glenn, I didn't get your email. My in box was full again. Shoot me another if you would like.
Good info... Glenn has a newer pump so it has the Edge filter in the pump . I do agree with Talyn on the reliability of cleaned IPR's , the small parts inside wear considerably , & tend to react less effectively . When they fail they get stuck ... Open , no start , closed the truck runs with the IPR unplugged...
Rick, your thoughts were with me today "Open, no start, closed, runs". I pulled the camper out of town today for twenty miles. I was impressed, no boost leaks giving me awesome boost. Re burned chip was feeling good, etc. The truck just pulled great!! Then the 'check engine' light came on. I was just thinking no big deal, the 1211 has been there before and I'll just keep going. Then the dreaded limp mode and I was STARTING OVER A BRIDGE! Luck was with me and I got over it and there was a pull off. Worked on the truck for an hour checking everything I could think of. Lots of cranking, I even started my generator to charge my batteries. Then I remembered 'open, no start. I had a old IPR in the bottom of my toolbox from five or so years ago. I stuck it in and varooooom!!! Went another 50 miles and set the code again and I just kept going. Another three days and a couple of hundred miles and hopefully I'll be back home without being stranded. Joey has a new IPR in the mail, I sure hope it cures this problem!
