I have a 78 f150 ranger exploer, with a blown motor. I just picked up another 351 m. It is a low mile motor, I will be tearing it down to inspect it and then clean it up and put new gaskets in. Is there anything that I need to look for that is specific to this engine, any suggestions on a cam, intake or carb. The truck will be used for pulling a car trailer and a 13ft camper, not at the same time...LOL

When I re-built my 79, I put in a Crane "RV" cam. It might have been boxed wrong as I had to shim the rockers and it had that "lope" at idle. Moved very well though.

As long as you have it apart, do the timing chain and oil pump as well. Cheap insurance. Also look at the cam gear on the distributor and the oil pump pump drive shaft to make sure it's not twisted.

GLR did you change the springs when you put that cam in?

Yes, I put in new Crane springs, as well as a double roller timing set. I would give you info on what I used (packrat) but, my papers are about 600 miles from here.
