Idling problem figured out!

90 F250 w/ 91 5.0 HO

Hey guys....after all the questions, and snooping through others threads I finally narrowed down my idling issue. The galloping issue on cold start up which was my initial problem was due to my IAC. Yesterday I took apart the IAC and cleaned her all up, put her back on with new gasket. Galloping gone. I also performed seafoam treatment via brake booster line using 1/3 the can with a 20min wait. Got some good smoke, but nothing crazy. (92,000kms on motor) Safe to believe the motors in good shape. However, when i was having the galloping issue, I was also having high idle problem at "normal" operating temp. (1000rpm) So after seafoam, not only did my throttle response sky rocket, and motor felt stronger...my "normal" temp idle went up too! 1200-1500rpm. Frustration has set it at this point. SO today, i said f*** it, ran to lordco and picked up the Innova Equus Ford Digital Code Reader (#3145, came with book with all codes)for $33 came home and plugged her in. I got code 63 "throttle position failure" TPS. Turned key over with engine off, grabbed my volt meter, set it at 10V and back probed at the harness to TPS. My idle reading was 1.0v which is correct i believe. So outa interest, I had throttle wide open and got 8v ( should be between 5.0v-10.0V ) So this undoubfully leads me to believe my TPS is faulty. That...or throttle body is clogged up. Will be replacing TPS tomorrow regardless, and cleaning throttle body out.

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone for all the help and support, you guys have been great. Hopefully, this will help any of you other Newbies just like me with issues like this.

BTW... check engine light in cab flashes code too, didnt know that.

I have a hard time believing you were getting a TPS output over 5 VDC. The VREF signal is only a 5 VDC voltage. There is no way the output signal can be greater than the supply voltage.

DTC 63 indicates the TPS voltage is below 0.6 VDC during the KOEO test. If the code is read from COM it indicates the TPS voltage was intermittently below 0.6 VDC. I would believe your TPS is probably faulty, but no way it can generate an output signal greater than the supply voltage.

For reference: Ford Fuel Injection » Throttle Position Sensor (TPS)

hmmmm, I must've read it wrong then. Thank you for pointing that out. Either way, I'm on the right track to success.

my mistake 63 is TSP circuit fault, below minumum voltage. When indeed my voltage was there. Thanks for clearing that up RLA2005
