I am pulling the transmission in my Excursion (2000 Gas 6.8L, 4x2) to replace the rear main seal. While I have the transmission separated from the engine I am going to replace the front seal in the transmission and the torque converter. The transmission is working fine but I would rather change the seal and convertor when I am in there then have the torque convertor croak and toast the transmission – from what I understand the torque convertors is the a weak point in these transmissions.
Right now the transmission has about 90K on it. It is in not original, is a Ford reman with a Factorytech upgraded Accumulator in it, an external filter and has been run with AMSOIL ATF. I also have a temp guage on it.
Other than a Ford reman convertor, which is about $250.00 + core what options are out there?
Since this is a just in case type of thing I don’t really want to spend over 400 bucks on one but it if there are units out there with either improved durability or performance I am open to recommendations.
