SOHC?

This may sound stupid since we are dealing with a FORD product but can someone tell me why the 4.0 SOHC has this name. It is obviously not a single overhead cam when it has two overhead cams. Seems to me it should be a 4.0 DOHC.

Cams are noted PER SIDE.
SOHC has 1 cam on each head
DOHC has 2 cams on each head.

I understand what SOHC and DOHC stand for and are "meant" to denote. My statement is that they refer to the whole engine with the total 4.0 displacement and then break the cam designation down to per head in the same reference. It would make more sense to refer to the whole engine in the same reference and not mix the two. ie
1 cam on each head in a V engine should be DOHC engine because the engine has 2 cams.
2 cams on each head in a V engine should be QOHC engine (with the Q being quad) because the engine has 4 cams.
JMHO

I understand "JMHO" and what you're saying. It's not a new designation though. I'm sure there were others before but in the early 60's Fords 'bad boy" 427 cammer was a SOHC.

I guess if you design/build your own engine you can call it whatever you want ...... as they have.

They should have stuck with the 4.0 OHV.

X2.

It is what it is, not what you think it should be.

SOHC & DOHC engines have been around at least since 1912 or so in cars and in airplanes from probably about that time or earlier.

It's PER HEAD.

As for keeping the OHV, if Ford had simply used a conventional cam timing chain set up, most the major issues with this engine would never have happened. The goof-ball 3 chain with one in the back is an idea that should have died in the idea stage, and should never have been produced.

Never mind that this engine should have been replaced with something that makes more power and less noise a long time ago as well.

The OHV sucks compared to the SOHC. The 4.0L OHV has low horsepower and torque ratings for the size of the engine. The SOHC is much more decent, but I think the horsepower numbers should be slighty higher.
-Having owned both, the SOHC is worth it (although its more trouble). The low end torque is way better, but the OHV is much more reliable. I have had more problems with the SOHC than OHV engine. It would be nice if ford made the SOHC engine with the quality of the OHV engine.
Not trying to start any fights here.
