Anyone know what causes the stinky smell from the cat. I have no engine lights or any indications of problems. Periodically will get the smell I normally find when behind chevy or toyotas.
Running a streetsmart intake and hi flow cat and exhaust system, 180 t-stat. Just started so is it an indication of maybe bad 02 sensor?
You can find a "sour" converter on any type of vehicle. When the engine management controls fail to operate properly, a miss, or oil fouling, additive poisoning, bad sensors, etc can destroy the catalysts in the converter. When they are only partially active some of the hydrocarbon compounds are converted into "aromatic" compounds that are named that because they smell... As well as other equally noxious fumes.
The only fix I know of is to replace the converter and check all of your engine controls to make sure you do not destroy the new one. The bad thing is that the controls don't have to be off enough to set the check engine light to destroy a converter.

You may also have some sort of misfire in the engine.........this will create a sulfur like smell.........Really bad. If the misfire is not bad enough the check engine light will not come on.
