Most people who get rid of a 6.0 near 100,000 miles have had a lot of trouble, or are worried they will once the warranty is up. Run an oasis to see the problems it's had. 06-07 6.0's are a bit better than the 03-05's but still very expensive to work on out of warranty. If I were you, I'd see if it still qualify's for an extended warranty purchase. better to pay $2,000 now than $8,000 having head gaskets, oil & EGR coolers, ect. done out of warranty. a 6.0 without a warranty can put you in the poorhouse quick!

Listen to LS-2's advise.....I don't think you want that 6.0. Research it, the new diesels are ok.

Thanks for the advise. Judging by what you said the 6.0 is known for it problems. What are some of them.

Can it be they want to trade it because they like the shiny 2011 6.7?

Really?

Fact:

Subtract the population of 6.0s that were 2003s, leaving just 2004 to 2010 in sample.

Take out the ones that were not properly maintained

Take out the ones without a coolant filter

Take out the ones that ran tunes or mods

Take out the ones that ran bad fuel (like unknown grade biodiesel)

Take out the ones used as grocery getters.

The rest of the sample... are among the most reliable vehicles ... that will rival the 7.3 as a legend.

I would skip the 6.0L personally. In addition to what was mentioned above, keep in mind that any engine repairs needed in the future are VERY expensive.

I would also have you look at your motives. Diesels are expensive to maintain. They are not the ideal engine for daily driving or casual towing. Guys do it, but it does require a level of maintenance and commitment that most people would not want to put forth.

If you want to buy one because you like diesel clatter and want to throw out clouds of black smoke, then find a 7.3L PSD. If you really want one for a daily driver because they are powerful then I would look at either the 7.3L PSD with a manual transmission or an 08-10 6.4L PSD with either transmission.

Ok you say they are not good daily drivers but stop and go daily driver stuff isn't all that good for gas engines eather. Is it worse with a diesel? And like what happens?

I'm now thinking a older 6.0 diesel might be just the truck for you...good luck with your purchase.

You're gonna find that typically the guys who don't like the 6.0l are have gassers, or their 6.0l owners who had a problem. For the most part though, 6.0l owners love their truck. It's got good power, but it takes some reading to treat it correctly.

Check out these 2 threads. Theyre both discussions regarding the pro's and con's of the 6.0l that I have participated in. If you do a quick search you'll find many more.

As others have said I would look very carefully into buying a diesel, do appropriate research before you buy anything the maintenance required is much more involved with a 6.0 than the modular engine that was in your 150...have you thought about a 5.4 or 6.8 gas engine? What are you using the truck for?

Problems I had are, 3 sets of injectors, 2 sets of head gaskets (yes the dealer installed ARP's when changing the first head gaskets), EGR & OIL coolers, high pressure oil pump, 2 transmissions, 3 Alternators, 3 sets of batteries, several different sensors, all within 3 1/2 years and 80,000 miles. This was on an 05 F450 tow truck that rarely towed more than 7500 pounds. (All totaled over $18,000 on a brand new truck before 80,000 miles) I traded it for a gas V10 F550 2 years ago, and it has been to the dealer only twice. Once when new for a sticky door handle, and once for a defective seat heater. Other than that, the V10 truck has only used tires and brake pads so far. It tows much heavier loads than my 6.0 ever did. If you don't need a diesel, stick with gas. Your wallet will thank you.

Do your research, try to find a good diesel mechanic (probably not the one at the ford dealer) to scan it and look it over, get an oasis report.

They are not as bad as some people make them out to be, but they have little tolerance for poor maintanance.

Last but not least, if you want one, and do your best on the above suggestions, you have a good chance!

Good luck on your decision! Enjoy!

P.S. where are you located?
