I left the truck outside during the holidays since the kids like to play in the garage and roller blade while off from school. The OAT on the house thermometer and Blackberry was -2F, the in cab reading was 4F. Didn't plug her in (kinda forgot in the Christmas scramble), just #2 diesel with some anti-gel/cetane boost additive. She's been sittin outside about 24 hourse or so......
Figured, what the heck - I'll take a quick video clip......
I know this isn't a big deal for the FTE'ers up in Alaska, Canada and the North Pole (since we all know Santa has a red Powerstroke) but I figure I would post it anyway.
When I start mine at those kind of cold temps, once it fires it goes immediately to 1200 rpms. After it idles a minute or so it slows to about 900. I worry about excess wear when it does that, but my UOA comes back good, so I think everything is OK.
that was pretty mild, but very representitive of the cold we face. that whine, at -10 or -15 is way worse, then the Romp, grrrr, Romp, Revvvv, whine, then errrrrrrrrr is pricless
We got you cold front Rich! Wind chill was -20* last night, OAT is 2* this morning. With synthetic oil and GP's and relay working properly, I haven't had any problems getting it started on the first try.
Didn't romp at all, congrats.
I didn't realize how noisy the automatic transmissions were on these trucks.
You can hear the pump over the noise of the engine.
Not sure Mike, next time I could hook up AE and see while cranking.

Dan, is that what that loud type whine is? The tranny pump trying to move the cold fluid.......... I didn't know what that was.
Cracking up on Rick's comment, you can say that again, to us anyways. Rich, your truck sounds great with those singles and exhaust, the sound of powwaa
My ps pump makes a lot of noise once the temps drop below 10*. The rest of the year it is quiet as a church mouse since I flushed it and put in synthetic ATF a couple of years ago.
It's either that or the PS pump. Nothing to worry about at those temps.

The truck is usually parked in the garage, not used to hearing the cold start whine....but it goes away in a short period of time...
synthetic ATF in the PS definetly made a difference though.....
