I picked up a solid Dana 44 axle to put into my 93 F150. I can't seem to get the manual hubs out, all the pieces needed to be removed are removed, but the main body of the hub is stuck in there, tho I can move it in and out about a 1/4". I have removed hubs before but never had to deal with this. Any tips?
It's been sometime for me but i seem to rembember having to to push in on the hub and reach around to the nuckle and push it towards the hub thus revealing the retainer clip. Try to clean everything first.
Not sure on a Dana 44 but my 50 has a couple retainer clips. One inside the locking hub itself which is easy to see. The real beach is the clip that sits around the inside lip of the wheel hub itself. If there is any grease, you may not be able to see the clip. It is about the size of a piston ring, usually black like grease, and sits low in the groove on the inner lip of the wheel hub. It is in maybe 1/4 to 1/2 inch from the lip if I remember right.
Wipe the lip out real good and feel around for a groove with a skinny screw driver or something. I bet you find a groove or the ring. Sliding around along where the ring should be, you will find a gap, about 1/2 inch in the ring. Work the end of the ring out of the groove at the gap and you are home free. It is very easy to do and is done faster than writing this down.
alls you need top do to get the hubs off is loosen all 6 screws that hold the cap.**** on, and take off the two retaining rings. one will be on the shafts and one on the inner diameter of the hub. if the hub wont slide out freely after that. just put two of the screws back in (without the cover) and pull. it should pop right out.
Everything is out that needs to be, i had already tried the two screw technique with no avail. Right now i have vice grips on each of the screw so i have something more to hold on to, i was pulling so hard on it i knocked the axle off the jackstands. I'll look at it again tomorrow, i'm too pissed off at it.
