Looking for any ideas on what might cause a short hesitation in the drivetrain when starting from a dead stop. My ride is a 92 f250 4X4 with a e40d.
Trani shifts and works well, but I get a short delay when I start off from a full stop. It is almost like something down the line from the 460 (trani, rear end) takes a second to engage. It doesn't bang when it engages or anything quite like that, but would make me think twice about pounding it to the floor from a full stop.
Trani bands need adjusting ??
Rear end issue ??
Transfer case or drive shaft ??
If you have had the same experience or have any tips on what to look for, it may help shorten the process of elimination.
First check your u-joints. Also remember that a rear end with alot of miles, will have wear on the gears. Change the u-joints and change the rear diff fluid, while you have the cover off inspect the gears for wear. These will be good places to start. Also weak leaf springs will cause alot of axle wrap, allowing the pinion to move alot, this also can cause the "jolt" you feel. If you don't have the torsion bar on or the bushings are worn this could result in the sensation as well. Try these and let me know what comes of it. If these don't work I can give you some more.
I dont suppose you get a "honk" sorta noise at the same time?
If you do...or even if you dont...you might want to remove your rear driveshaft and grease the splines inside the slip yoke. They can bind up on the output shaft of the trans or transfer case and cause a feeling like you're describing.
Ran into simliar problem, all checked OK until I checked the left motor mount and found it broken. The safety feature Ford designed into the vehicle was preventing the engine from going all the way over.
Thanks for the input...
I don't get a "honk" noise, and I have checked the motor mount which are A-OK.
Lots of possibilities to look into. I will check what I can on my own, and then have a mechanic friend with a shop look at the way over my abilities stuff.
Thanks for the input. This site/community is great.
