I have a 1994 f-350, 4x4, 460 motor. This has got to be the worst truck ever built....this last problem is a doozie, any suggestions b4 I just destroy my headache...During idle temp is fine, when driving it will overheat, new thermostat and now it seems to be leaking oil out of the front of the motorthis beast has been nothing but 1 problem after another. Also, i have found these trucks to have major rust issues....any sugestions
Alot of it is going to depend on how the truck has been maintained over its life. Keep in mind it is a 17yr old truck now, and if it's lived an overly hard life is going to need a little TLC to get things back into shape. To address your listed issues..
Heating while driving can be anything from the T-Stat, to a clogged radiator, to a leaking head gasket, or even a old worn out water pump with the impeller about shot.
Oil from the front... timing cover gasket, front seal, oil pan gasket (could also be from being overheated causing a gasket or seal failure)
Rust... nature of the beast in salt road areas... best bet, take a trip down south to Georgia, Alabama or such, and raid the Pull-a-Part junkyard for body panels... I raided a complete 93 ext cab, doors, bed, fenders and t-gate for about $500, all rust free original FoMoCo sheet metal ready to sand, spray, and bolt on
X2 un everything above. and don't bash that truck. the 460 is a very good engine. but no matter what you have, if it's not taken care of it WILL have problems occurring faster and more often than one given respect no matter the maker. although ford still has the lead over the rest
Why'd you buy it then?? Look, just take it a step at a time and fix one issue, then the next. My worn out 350 4x4 has a 460 with 235K miles on it. I got it pretty cheap and have spent the last 6 months fixin little issues with it...Im sure mine was abused, still mine is goin strong...yeah if you destroy it, give it to one of us who cares about it at least.
Whithin 6 months..Mine:
Wouldnt heat up...stuck Tstat
NO heater..clogged heater core, flushed it with compressed air.
Randomly dies...PIP in distributor
timing chain coolant leak...new chaiming chain and gaskets.
Water pump leak shortly after...new water pump
Oil leak...loose oil pan drain plug
Brakes pulled HARD left...rear drums gone, left side drum and pads installed backwards (no kidding)
Door wouldnt open, handle broke, pulled through sheet metal....fixed with big bolt, loarge washers and a new handle.
Door wouldnt shut...simple re-align of the striker.
These trucks are not junk heaps and the 460 is incridibly tough. Anything abused will eventually break down. Its amazing what proper basic care for a vehicle can do.
I agree with much that has been said. I recently purchased the truck and can't comment on previous use...What I'm saying is compared to other trucks I have had that before repairs and same life....this 1 seems to really be poor.
