I'm just putting back together a '98 Expedition from replacing all 8 coils and plugs. Just start taking crap apart that's in the way...it's not easy if you've never done it before, as I discovered. Fuel rails have to come off, removal is easy but they can be ornery about going back on all the way. Some have said they didn't have to remove the two heater hoses on the passenger side going in to the firewall, but I frankly see no way on earth of getting around them without removing them. Primary fuse junk and power steering bracket have to be moved out of the way, PCV hose, and I'm sure I'm forgetting a couple other little random things.

There's lots of threads about tuning up these engines already out there though.

I'm not sure how different your '98 is from my '00. I have a 5.4 and only removed the cover over the intake, zip-tied the heater hoses out of the way, and had plenty of tools. You will need extensions, elbows, and I want to say a 5/16 socket for the COP's. Use electrical tape to hold all sockets and extensions together so they don't fall off. Just be patient and you'll be fine. I also used 2 pieces of 2" foam on top of the engine so I could lay down. If you have the same engine compartment layout as me, you don't need to remove all that stuff. Good luck and let us know how you did!

plugs

Hello,
I have a 05' Expy, and have yet to change the plugs, with 108K miles. I've heard anything from nightmare to not too bad, if you got the right tools...which I have. Anybody have any advice for me when I do this? I was going to do it this weekend in my brother in laws heated shop, but my wife has other plans for me. I believe that I need to get this done, just simply for the fact that my fuel economy (I know, economy and expedition don't go together...i.e. oxymoron) has dropped by 2-3 mpg. I was also told that my engine is the 3 valve, and that mech. said those are especially bad to do...
thanks for any input.

Dano, I would follow lv2race's advice.

I had a lot of foam when I did mine too. A good work platform helps a lot too. Be sure to work clean, blow out every plug well before removing the plug. Take your time torquing the plugs.

It's not that bad of a job once everything is pulled out of the way. I was nervous when breaking loose every plug though.
