Sorry to add another "leaking thread" to the forum.
I have searched several of the other threads on leaks, but I am trying to narrow down to what mine maybe and not subscribe to tons of other threads.
I actually have 3 leaks all together:
1. Leaking from the water pump. I have the replacement already. check.
2. Leaking from the oil drain plug. Just a couple of drops here and there. Not bad but irritating.
3. Most concerned about. Oil is leaking from what appears to be the little opening (half moon shape) near what I believe is the housing before the trans. Its about 10 inches or so from the oil plug. This leak is greater than the others.
Where to start is the main question?
I have heard to check the valley, turbo, HPOP. As a novice on a moderate budget what am I looking?
Go to auto parts store and get some copper plug gaskets made for the pan drain bolt.
Climb on top of the engine with a flashlight and look way down into the valley. I bet you will see pools of oil/fuel up there. Clean the valley by spraying simple green all over and wash off with a water hose. Then start the truck and look for the leak. Look around/under the turbo and in front of the engine around the HPOP. Once you find the leak, we can help you fix it. Usually the problem is 0-rings.
Check your fuel bowl drain valve also. Mine is leaking and by the time the fuel travels down the valley and hits the driveway it can look a lot like oil.
I finally had a chance to really inspect the valley situation.
I can see a build up of oil just about in the middle of the valley about half way back. The fittings on the HPOP appear to be fine without leaks. I cant get all the way around to the back of the turbo. With the amount of oil dripping/leaking each time there should be more oil near the HPOP if that is what it is.
I wish it would get wormer here in michigan so I can work on the truck outside.
There's a drain hole on the back of the valley on the passenger side. That will allow the valley to drain off excess oil/fuel down the back of the block. Check around the turbo pedestal. It's hard to see in there. A good flashlight and something to stand on to get your head in there. Can you wipe up the oil so you can see how much is actually leaking. A little bit can look like alot.
I certainly know what you mean about the cold. I've been tinkering with my truck the past two weeks doing a full brake job and F650 dash with gauges. Those tools are cold. I have a shop I can heat up but it takes a while to make it comfortable.
If you can't spot a leak I would, and have, removed the spider to get a better look. Gives a much better view and makes it easier to use a mirror to look under the HPOP. You can let it idle with it removed but be careful, you don't want anything to fall into the plenums or get sucked into the turbo. Keep track of the o-ring that goes between the spider and turbo. If it is a turbo o-ring or an EBPV actuator leak you will have to remove the spider anyway. If it is an HPOP leak that you must remove the HPOP to repair, although not necessary, removing the spider makes it easier. JMHO
Well Its definitily in the valley. I am a novice here when it comes to mechanical work on diesels.
As I look down into the vally just under the "spider" there appears to be a grove holding liquid. As I look farther back towards the turbo I see another grove with appears to be liquid. I also see a hole (probably with a bolt in it) has liqiud in it.
As stated in previous posts I do have a water pump leaking problem. Does or could this be liqiud from that in those groves with the oil? As the liquid hits the ground from the drian hole (half moon shape opening) on the bottom it looks like only oil.
This is starting to be more irritating as it goes on.
It doesn't seem as if the vehicle is driving or acting any different though.
