Where's Caterpillar?
That engine is referred to as a 4BT. 4 four cylinders, B engine series, T turbo, A for aftercooled if it is...by this nomenclature the pickup would be a 6BTA but it is now an ISB being that it has electronic controls and 24 valves. IS stands for Interact System I think, some Cummins jargon.

1) somebody joked about toyota - toyota's own in-house diesels are from their Hino truck line. they dont need to develop them, and offer diesels up to 3.8L displacement in pretty much all markets except N.America.
2) Daimler / Chrysler. offically the 1st ******* you'll see from this is going to the be the 2004 diesel Liberty, w/ a daimler 2.5TD engine. whether it proves viable will in large part depend on N.American fule: Benz pulled out of theN.American , market with their diesels because their newest alloy head/4 valve per cylinder setup was having problems from spot temps associated with low cetane N. Amrican fuel. even my rig, which is based around an older 240D sedan motor has 'issues' with certain brands of diesel, and locally, at least, only mohawks low sulpher w/ performance enhancer fuel runs consistanly well.
3) re: conversions/ other options, has anyone on here considered an Mercedes INDUSTRIAL diesel setup? 5.2-5.7 liter straight 6, up to ~350HP I believe. they were found in some of the older 10 ton mercedes cargo trucks, and some newer unimogs. More than samll enough to fit into a full size N.American truck chassis. Might interest a few of you on here to know I've seen / been involved with some private conversions, putting 5 cylinder Mercedes 300TD's into everything from Jeep Wagoneers, to 70's vintage ford pickups, to Toyoya Land Crusiers, and older Land Rovers. in all cases, the standard N.American diesels would have been either too big, or too heavy to be 'realistic' swaps...most people just dont realise there WERE other, smaller diesels out there.
as a non-mainstream diesel driver, Its interesting to see some of the tech questions, and answers on here. I wanted a turbodiesel without having to spend big $$, or drive a larger vehicle, so, in essance, I've built my own, based around the Mercedes 4 cylinder sedan engine. To add to the comments on rough running 4 cylinders, I can say that, in SMALL applications at least, IDI still has a place, as they run far smoother than DI motors.( basing this on my 2.4 IDI Mercedes VS the Jetta TDI I've also owned - despite 25 years of technology, the TDI ran rougher, and louder than my Benz powered SUV.)
intersting thread - what other conversions / setups has everyone seen, or thought up??
Chris
