I had a coworker that wanted to go out to the range to "learn how to shoot"
I brought a nice selection of rifles and pistols appropriate for beginners. Heavy on 22's and smaller calibers.
He went thru those quickly without really learning much, but he insisted he need to fire "The big ones".
I stupidly said OK and handed him my M1 shooting 30-06. A decent cartridge but a little much for beginners. He fired off a few rounds but it was obvious that he was developing a wonderful flinch. I told him to hold the butt firmly against his shoulder to minimize recoil. I handed him another clip of cartridges and before I could stop him he held the gun about 6 inches in front of his shoulder and well, you know the rest. He did not get knocked out but did decide to move on to pistols now that he had "Mastered" the rifle. He had a wonderful black and blue shoulder after that.
He again needed to "Shoot the big one". I told him he should start with the Ruger Mark II 22. He fired off a magazine and then decided to graduate to my 44mag with full house handloads. He shot off the cylinder with no visible effect on the target, but was shaking badly when he put the gun down.
STOOPID me, I loaded it again and asked if he wanted another go. He picked up the pistol and as he was raising it to aim, he put a round thru the table top.
End of lesson for him and me.
Future range sessions, he played more with my AR15 and an AK47 shooting .223's. Nice pop guns that anyone could shoot all day. He did shoot all day and went thru maybe 1,000 rounds of reloads(back in the day when it cost only about 6 cents to reload a 223). We even took pictures of him with the AK and a belt of ammo, for his mother in Palestine. No doubt she had a minor coronary.
I love watching new shooters who won't listen at the range, but am guilty of letting a few try out more than they can handle. NOT a safe thing to do.
Oh the stories..............Had a buddy once that carried a little 32 cal and couldn't understand why I liked my 44 mag, so I let him try one of my hot loads. Took off his right eyebrow..........He was not happy, HeHe.........
Seeing things like this, and people hold their pistols like some gangbanger..........Makes me want to puke.
Firearms are to be handled properly and with respect, if you can't,........go find another hobby.
