fuel sending unit float

in 96, what was used as a float? did they still use the little metal float, or did they switch to something different. my gauge is reading lower that it actually is. i know with the the older setup the float would sometimes take on fuel and read incorrectly. is this the same with the newer trucks?

Could be something as simple as a poor ground. The brass floats have been known to leak. With those tank floats , fuel level is measured in Ohms as resistance.

Yep its the same type of float that was used on the older vehicles. The gauge works off of resistance. So you could have a problem with the float taking on fuel, a bad or dirty connection, or the gauge itself.

I know on mine the front tank reads full like its supposed to when its filled up. The rear tank only reads about 95 or so percent full when its filled up. Its been this way for 10 years and probably since new.
