that's right, I couldn't beleive it the first time, so I took it over a 2 tank interval, and it got even better. I just got the timing almost perfect on the MSD distributor, and then drove it 75-80 MPH down the freeway with a C4 auto, and scored a whopping 16.35 MPG. I've never gotten milage this good. I havn't tuned my Edelbrock 600 in over 2 years, and this is the 2nd engine with the 3rd cam that it's seen, and I've still never done anything but mess with the idle mixture and the choke. I did put a new short block on it over Christmas, a hyd. roller cam block with a factory explorer cam, but I had no idea I was going to rock this hard. It'd be one thing if it was weak, but it's as strong as it's ever been.
Sorry for the rant, but I was so happy I didn't know what to do, I was used to getting anywhere from 10-13. I finally got the timing right, and now I've got the timing to where I can make best power, and do it on lower octane fuel than I have been running. Havn't been bold enough to do 87 yet, but it's doing 92 fine, next week I'll try 89, and eventually I'll be back to rocking the cheap stuff again!
Dang John, that's great! Without overdrive and still that good of mileage with increased power. You cant beat that with a ten foot pole. You wouldn't happen to have a condensed list of what you have in that engine, do you? Someday the '78 will need a buildup and I wouldnt mind having that kinda mileage, especially with today's gas prices.
Hey TK
I have a similiar set up to your old motor with the comp 31-255-5 cam. Was wondering what your timing was set to. I beleive mine is 9 now and it has great power but must run 91 or better octane to stop detonation when I have it at full throttle. Thinking of retarding a few degrees and cold intake and 180 thermastat to help.
Your also doing better considering I have OD and get about 13-14. Better on highways.
I couldn't find the specs on that cam, but I can tell from the part number that it's an extreme energy 302 cam, but I can't tell which one. What's your static compression ratio, because the XE cams have such a tight LSA that it might build enough dynamic pressure to cause that pinging, nomatter what you do with the timing. When I had the XE 250 cam in my old 302, I was running 14 degrees initial, 38 total, and all timing was in by 2800 RPM (MSD distributor, 2 blue (light) springs), and full vacuum advance. Now I have a higher static ratio, about 9.6 on my new hyd. roller cam engine with a stock Explorer 5.0 cam, and I'm running 14 initial, 36 total, with timing in by 3200 ( 1 blue, 1 silver (heavy) spring), and full vacuum advance. it wasn't until very recently that I actually got the timing right on the thing, before that I had to disconnect my vacuum advance to take the pinging out, but now it's running so well that I'm slowly dropping the fuel octane until I can get it running as good as it is now, on 87 grade fuel.
