The factory sub is a 8" woofer in a sealed enclosure. The sub is a shallow magnet style. You can replace it with another shallow magnet style 8" sub, or with work, retrofit a 10" in the hole. Breathing is the biggest issue to third party subs, some have managed to mount decent sounding dual 10's into the side though by extending encloseure down acrossed the entire back panel (custom moulded fiberglass panel) or using in the floor breathing.

Do you have any pics of a 10" mounted in factory hole? I've got an '03 Expy and have been researching options for adding sub in a 'stealth' manner. I've seen some of the powered sub solutions but they only seem to be for Gen 1 Expy's or like '07 and up. So now I've been thinking maybe factory enclosure with upgraded driver. . . .
And I'd like to see a pic of your brush guard. That's another of my considerations for my truck.

. Wish I could find a guard with a wide headlight opening to show the tops and bottoms of the lights. Anyways here's the guard, looking at 12863 (Expedition all model 03-06).WAAG : Application Guide : Grille Guards
