I'm in the process of doing a tune up. I am having the ds2 checked out shortly, and then I am also going to tune the typical cap and rotor, wire stuff, pcv valve, pry a carb rebuild as I want to learn and figure its due. I have changed the oil, coolant, air filter, plugs, heater hose I think inlet closest one to the engine on the heater core connections.
I had a few questions about the vaccum system. Going from my PCV I have the hot idle compensator and tee, which has a rotator switch that I can move 360 all the way around. This line is headed towards my carberator from the PCV. Secondly I have a vaccumn line from the carb itself plugging into the air cleaner housing, just curious as to what this was for? I am assuming that one vents the crankcase into the carb, and then the carb recycles that into the air cleaner housing to be re used?
I also have a ball shaped thing on my passenger fender in front of my blower motor. It has a hose t on it, with one end being connected to the ball and the other heading towards the blower motor but is disconnected. I checked my shop manuals but found no luck?
The ball-shaped thing is a vacuum reservoir. Useful for your vacuum-actuated HVAC stuff so that the sudden drop in vacuum doesn't affect your timing or other vacuum-sensitive stuff.
You might want to check your valvecovers for a "configuration code" or a "production code" and try to look up the vacuum diagram for your motor and configuration. That will help clue you in where all the vacuum lines actually go and what the might do. The diagram could also appear on your radiator core support.
This is all assuming everything is still factory original.

The round plastic ball (looks like the Death Star) is a vacuum reservoir for your HVAC controls. A vacuum line should be hooked from the ball and into the 3-port vacuum "tree" located up high on the firewall on the passenger's side. From that "tree," make sure on one of the other two ports that another vacuum line is connected to the main vacuum tree that is screwed into the intake manifold.
I'm not sure about the other vacuum lines you are talking about, only that I've never seen a vacuum line connected from the carburetor to the air cleaner assembly.
Near as I can tell they are either for PCV or hot idle stuff which would make sense. I came across that description searching for something else entirely. I will try and grab some more pics when I go home on spring break.
A vacuum line going to your aircleaner would control the heat riser flap in the snorkel.
it should first go to a thermal switch in the floor of the air cleaner and then from there to the vacuum actuator above the heat riser.
Did you post your vacuum diagram already, in one of your threads?
Perhaps you can show it here?
