Just want to hear what you all are using, your likes/dislikes. Include your vehicle spec. Looking for comparable vehicles. Mine is an 86 F-350 4X4 Crew Cab with monobeam front axle (leaf springs). If you had to cut or mod the pipes or fender wells.
F150 2wd w/a/c. No modifications needed. But after taking off to remove enging they now take like 3-4 exhaust gaskets on some of the ports to seal, and are an absolte paint to reinstall. But thats with about any manifold/header.
Hedman a PIA with thin flanges that warped, ended up using RTV as gaskets. One small ding on passenger side pipe to fit, but in all fairness headers were intended for F250 4x4 460 application.
L&L no problems at all.
Have used Sanderson on other applications with no problems.
Headman Elite series. These are thermal coated with thick flanges and 14ga tubing. I have two broken off bolts on the passenger side, and one on the drivers side, and with copper gaskets, they seal up fine. Installation was a snap, but I did have to make a small notch in the passenger side frame rail, as one of the tubes was just barely rubing the frame.
I LOVE these headers! No heat increase, great performance inprovement, looks great, around $300.
Sanderson Headers. 78 Bronco with a swapped in 460. Jet-Hot coated. They use a thick flange, no warping. They also recommend using high temp black RTV to seal. After 5 years, havn't had any problems with them. Except for they are starting to rust in some spots. But that's Jet-Hot's problem, lifetime warranty. I bought them at a car show in Daytona for a discounted show price of $385. Expensive, but worth it. Copper Seal gaskets are a must, best seal ever.
I just picked up some headers made for 73-79 trucks (came out of a 79 half ton) that I am installing on my 76 F150 with 460. They are a Mexican-made variety, no brand name I can see, just says 'Mexico' on them with part number.
Should I see any mounting problems, such as having to raise the engine?
Also, I will need gaskets. What is recommended? The flanges are about 1/4 inch thick, and look pretty hearty...
I think I will also get new bolts... Is there a particular bolt I should be buying? I think they will be a little shorter than stock cast-iron manifold bolts, right? Any help appreciated! maybe I should just stop at MOPAC?
Looking for anyone with this type truck solid front axle leaf springs using headers, preferably Tri-Y's, looking for headers to increase torque and hopefully bolt on without frame mods.
Any Thorley users?
Another option considering is the Sanderson Shortys's, trying to find out if they bolt into the exhaust at about the same place as stock manifolds.
I'm using L&L headers. Beautiful nickel-plated construction and welding, super thick flanges, no warping, fit like a glove, no interference problems, plenty of starter clearance. Couldn't be more pleased. My other experience is that Thorleys are also excellent and so is Thorley customer service.
Stan's Tri-Y headers in the same truck as my signature line. Heavy flange, good clearance, nice addition of ball instead of three bolt for collector. Still bending some stainless for the exhaust but should have it ready this week (fingers crossed). I tried most of the others and they didn't fit as well as having poor quality. I didn't try L&L because I wanted them inside the frame rail and my oil pan would not allow their pipes to fit. Not the same as your application but they are Tri-Y's.

It seems like every one is running a automatic trans anyone with standard with headers or do you have same problem of mechanical linkage binding on clutch pedal depressing. Thinking of going to try hyd clutch linkcage(hose) master & slave cylinder. I am re restoring my 1970 F100 had a 428 scj 2 fours ran 13.0 in 1/4 mile 103mph. back in early 70ts. Have had a 460 in it want to build stroker blown ect.
I have a manual tranny and hadn't thought about that issue yet. Been focused on getting between the frame and block on the passenger side. Wish I had kept my list of info on all the different headers I have researched weaned the file out a short while ago.
I am having a new exhaust system installed in June, using a set of truck manifolds into 2.5" front pipes to run into a Flowmaster 50 series 2.25" dual inlet/3" single outlet muffler. Flowmaster has a 70 bigblock series that utilizes 3"dual inlets/3.5" single outlet. The Sanderson Shorty's with 3" collector outlets exit just like the truck manifolds. You could then have 3" dual pipe to the muffler and exit at 3.5" that would build horsepower and some torque like using a Y-pipe. I am more interested in torque so I am holding out for a Tri-Y long header, which is why I went with 2.5" pipe (header conversion later, legal now). So far Thorley and Stan's firmly state they have models that will fit the application.
Heddamen's site has an application chart that lists vehicle/engine/tranny and shifter location for their headers.
meant to ask you if you wanted a manual linkage over hydraulic if you thought about using a cable clutch like the mustangs? I have a buddy into Mustangs and he suggested it to me. My truck was butchered and I need to address the clutch linkage, probably going hydraulic with a 12" HD clutch, but I tow heavy weight on steep graded rough roads.
