Looking at Buy a Excursion

Looking at buying a 2002 Excursion with the V-8 in it. I pull a boat that only weighs 4500lbs. My question is is the 5.4L ok for towing aboat 5 or six times a year? Or should i just get the V-10? Which one has more MPG?

My price range is only 9k

Are the transmissions the same in the V-8 and V-10?

Your thoughts?

A V8 would work for your boat. V8 will have better MPG as a daily driver. Towing, it may be equal to the V10 or maybe a little worse and you won't have the power.

Do you know of any problem with the transmissions in either one? My boat weighs 3300lbs plus trailer and gear. I guessing at 4500lbs.

I pulled the boat find with a 1997 Suburban 2wd, 5.7L in it.

Just the GM transmissions in 1997 where junk! I had to get it repaired at a cost of $2500

Hope the Ford trany is better?

I've not heard anything bad about the gassers with the 4R100 tranny. Just when it is paired with the 7.3L diesel. The engine puts out more torque than it can handle.

Transmissions are the same. If you are only going to tow 5 or 6 times a year you should be fine. I would look for the 4.10 or 4.30 rear gears though. The V8 will get better MPG on the hwy, other wise will probably be about the same as the V10. Good luck, John

The 5.4L motor is a "good" motor. Ford only put 3.73's and 4.10's behind the 5.4L and if I had a choice...I would look for the 4.10's.

However the 5.4L is a tad underpowered for a vehicle the size and weight of the Ex alone...let alone dropping an additional 4500#'s behind it...thankfully it is a boat with low wind profile though and not a brick of a travel trailer...

As far as 6.8L versus 5.4L...the 6.8L is obviously a much more powerful motor and you will definitely feel it towing with the V10 being much more comfortable even if it is only a few times per year...

Price wise...you should be able to find a V10 for ~$9K out there...but it may not be a 2002...

Just my $0.02
