yeah
i did search..
anyways i got a 85 f150 with a 69 351w with stock points
(motor is all stock)
can i use the square coil with points? off my 85 tfi eec 302?
i am also thinking about a dura spark 2 or pertronix set up
but that will be when it warms up. (no garage)
You can try it, but I believe you will find your points don't last as long. The square coil is more powerful, but it also draws more current through the points.
Short answer is it will run with the square coil but “point life” will be less or to say you will burn up the points due to the higher current flow caused by the lower primary resistance of the square coil.
Also you will need to check the coil positive voltage with the key ON and the points CLOSED to be sure the voltage is lower then 10 volts… to verify the resistor wire is dropping some of the applied voltage. If it is not and you are using full battery voltage to the coil you might also get arcing at the points. You can install a ballast resistor if the coil voltage is too high.

yeah
that's about what I thought...
I have cceramic ballast resistor
what do you guys think ds2 or pertronix ???
I'd like to keep it al ford
if I go ds 2 what year 351w distributor
do you recommend ?
thanks
If you really want to keep your Ford stock, the DSII is the way to go. Petronix is cool, but offers nothing that your truck can use aside from the cool factor.
Any pre 84 dizzy will work, and all the 351's will work if it's for a HO (4V). Just make sure it has a single vacuum line and you're golden.
thanks for the info
i thought 302 and 351w used different distributors...
and its a flat tappet cam (69 mtr.) when did ford start with the roller cam?
will i need the cast gear or steel for the distributor?

No so fast with the pertronix. I have never had one, but know people with older vehicles that like them and claim faster starts and smoother running engines. For a points system they offer maintenance free operation. This situation is a little unusual in that he has a later model truck with points, and in this case the pertronix would be a upgrade. Whatever he chooses will be a upgrade from points. And you can always throw the old points in the glove box and stick them in place if the pertronix ever fails.
302 and 351w distributors will not interchange, the oil pump drive is bigger on the 351w. If you are going with a DSII, you won't have to worry about the gear, I don't think they ever made a 351w DSII dist/roller cam combo.
hey
could i run a duraspark distributor as a trigger w/o a module ?
then use the square coil?
basically i want no electronics and as simple as possible staying all ford.
thanks
Nope. If you want it with no electronics, you will have to stay with the points system. All of the non-points systems have electronic boxes, either built into the dist or mounted on the side of the dist or the fenderwell.
Or you could add an MSD 6A box and keep your points distributor use an MSD coil that
goes with the 6A and all your points will now do is just trigger the ignition. They will last
practicall forever used in this fastion. I run this setup on an all original 1967 Corvette
with the stock distributor and it has run well for the last ten years. A big improvement
over the stock ignition setup.
