Hi all! I'm new to the membership side of it but not to reading the forums. Some great stuff, and helpful beyond words, thanks. I am in the process of building a "64" F 100. I like F.E.s so I removed the Y-block in favor of a "58" 352 P.I. I live on a small mountaintop here in E.Tn. so I have decided on a T-85 O.D. so I can climb the hill easily and also get at least a little better M.P.G. as well as standing on it a little every now and then. If any of you have ANY advice on this swap or where I can pick up the necessary switches and stuff I would appreciate it. Look forward to hearing from all. Thanks Russ
Russ, welcome to FTE. There used to be a a guy on here that knew these inside and out, his name was Banjo66 or Banjopicker or something like that. Search for posts under his name for information on that overdrive.
Hey Confederate Diesel, Thanks for the welcome and thanks for the lead. I'll do as suggested and search for him. Back in the day we used to throw the T-85s away in favor of a 4 spd. but after reading some articles on them they are really pretty sharp. My truck has a 3 on the column now and this will allow me to keep it stock in that regard Thanks Russ
Hey Jowlicker, thanks for the reply, but could you be a little more specific? I had a "56" Victoria in "69" and "70" that had a T-85 behind a built 352. A buddy of mine had a Ranchero with one behind a 427 until he replaced it with a T-10. It's my understanding they were available behind the early "60"s F.E. in the cars. I know there will be a few issues with the bell housing in the truck but if you have found other problems I'm all ears. Thanks Russ
The Warner T-85N Overdrive was an extra cost option for 1965/71 F100's (I bought a new '65 F100 352 with this trans). Available with the 240/300 I-6 / 352 (1965/67) / 302 (1969/71) / 360 (1968/71).
The T-85N was also used in 1958/67 Galaxie 352's, 1958/60 T-Bird 352's, 1942/51 Lincoln's, 1955/56 Packards, Hudsons and Nashes, 1956/63 Studebaker Trucks and etc.
1953/64 F100's with 223's and 292's used the Warner T-86 Overdrive, as did myriad 1949/65 Passenger Cars, 1955/57 T-Bird's.
Installation: Besides the trans (assuming it still has the governor and solenoid mounted to it), you will also need the wiring harness, O/D relay, kickdown switch and the O/D cable.
Good luck finding any of these parts new, finding the parts used is no picnic either. The O/D relay is...by far...the hardest part to find.
Hey Jowilker and NumberDummy, thanks for the replies. I have the tranny and it has both the governor and solenoid (not sure how good yet) but I have already figured out how hard ANY of these parts are to find! Story of my life I think. An article I've read out of Hemmings outlining the operation of this o.d. really intrigues me. I've had them before and evidently never used them correctly. Looking forward to learning properly. And John your're correct the "56" was a cobbled up hot rod but I sure wish I had it back! This little truck is going to be a daily driver so I'm going to make it the way I want it. Retain interior (highly optioned) and make the ext. a "66". I have 2 T-10s and a big shaft toploader but I'm really drawn to this crazy o.d. notion. Thanks again, Russ

I found 48 of these NOS.
In May, the F100 SuperNationals 3 day truck show and swap meet is held in Pigeon Forge TN
I attended the 2008 event (it was then held in Knoxville). If you're looking for parts, this is the event to attend.
Not only are there piles of NOS and used parts from a gazillion sellers, but repro parts sellers Carolina Classics & Dennis Carpenter also attend this meet.
NumberDummy, you are damn amazing. I was SO sad until I read the part about finding the 48 nos! Can you give me your best lead on some of them? I read a post here from one of the moderators about a wiring diagram for this system and it looks like a guy could maybe make this up by himself. Unfortunately not this guy. I knew a guy a lot like you in the late sixties and early seventies in SoCal. His name was Andy. Never needed a parts book. Sure appreciate all you guys on here. Great day when I stumbled onto this site!!!! Thanks again, Russ.

What dealer in SoCal did Andy work at? That name sounds familiar. I was a Ford partsman in SoCal (LA LA Land) from 1962 thru 1997.
Hey NumberDummy, he was at Dunton in Santa Ana until he got mad and left. I wasn't working at the rental yard then but I think he went to Anaheim, and the name of the dealership escapes me now. His last name was one of those ski's. We affectionately called him "Pollack". It's been twenty years since I've lived there and can't quite remember! It'll come to me about 3 o'clock this morning. Do you know him. He would be about late 70's in age now if he's still with us. Russ

Didn't know Andy, I never worked in Orange County. There was a Mills Ford in Anaheim at one time. McCoy-Mills is the long time dealer in Fullerton.
FTE Ford Dealer Parts Dept sponsor PARTSGUYED.COM is Ed Olson, the parts manager of Horizon Ford in Seattle WA.
Ed is a SoCal native and worked here before moving to WA. His dad was the long time parts manager at...Dunton Ford.
Hey ND, there, that's easier!! I think it was Mills, but again not entirely sure. I know Andy was at Dunton in the early "70"s for sure but I don't know when he left exactly. What a small world! I used to build engines for a place called Duke Blowers Equip. Rentals for their fleet of Ford trucks among other things. Ol Andy could be a real hothead but did he ever know Ford parts!!!! Thanks for the leads by the way, Russ.
