i have a problem that i hope someone on here can help me with
i recently took over a project (1968 f100) from my brother it has a built 390 in it with a c6 auto tranny
my problem is that when my brother had the motor built he had the complete rotating assembly spin balanced with a fluid dampner and a hays flexplate but the flexplate is a 164 tooth unit.so my starter will not engage the flexplate
i know that the 390 should have a 184 tooth flexplate
my question is could i use a starter for a 460/c6 combo sense the 460 runs a 164 tooth flexplate and the c6 bell housing deminsions are close to each other
or is there any other starter out there that would work
Well it might be possible to run the 460 starter but I have never tried so someone else will need to comment on that but many times you can find alternate tooth size starters at your parts store. Asking about tooth count they should be able to look up the appropiate starter for you.
Now if that doesn't work you could always try a generic starter from Summit Racing.
If I'am not mistaken the 390/C6 had originally a 164 tooth flexplate on them...They may have went to a 184 tooth in the later years.. You should be able to go to the parts store and tell them you need a starter for your engine and trans combo 390/C6 with the 164 tooth count flexplate and get the starter with the right pinion gear on it...All the FE aftermarket zero balanced flexplates I have ever run across were the 164 tooth plates..JMO.. Good Luck !
