I checked this out on the rangerstation.com and they make is sound pretty straight foreward. What kind of carburator can I replace the current 1 with? Does anyone have any experience on the conversion that could shine some light on this for me?
Will this work without changing the carb?
I'm pretty low on the $$$ so is there a cheaper or temperory fix that I can do to make my bII run better untll I can afford this "operation?" I'm tired of hesitating down the road.
I have a 84 BII, v6 2.8L, 4spd, 4x4, 92,000 miles. The issues I'm currently dealing with are on a thread I posted earlier this week.
I did the conversion a few years ago on my 84 Bronco II.I bought a used small Holley 2bbl carb off ebay. You could probably just as easily use a non feedback Motorcraft 2bbl from something older.Do a little research on how to identify the ones with the small butterflies.Instead of using the Duraspark module I used a GM HEI module.Wiring is easy, if you Google it you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a diagram.I found a 2.8 Duraspark distributor at the wreckers but those are getting rare so you might have to get one from the parts store. One advantage of the HEI module is it allows you to keep the stock coil but make sure the module is mounted on some sort of a heat sink as they get hot.The distributor I found at the wreckers had the small style cap which used a different style of plug wires.I cross checked some part numbers and figured out that the cap,cap adapter and rotor from the straight 6 motors in the Mustangs and Fairmonts would fit the 2.8 distributor so I used those to keep my old plug wires.Total cost was less than $100 for everything since the distributor, module.cap and rotor all came from the wreckers.
You can do the entire electrical end of the Dura spark conversion for about $280, distributor included and all new parts from NAPA......a 2150 Motorcraft 2bbl off a 74-78 Mustang II or 79-80 Mustang with a 2.8 is good choice, any 2100 or 2150 non feedback motorcraft 2bbl off a 302 will work well too.
I did the conversion also on my '84. I too used the HEI module with the Durasprak distributor. I bought a new distributor for about $45, HEI for $17 and then some wiring. Its not difficult. Now my engine went, so I'm about swap a different engine in . . but the Durasprak setup will work with that too, an advantage. I used a older 2100 Motorcraft carb abd then jetted it for this engine.
The thing ran very well when it was all said and done.
The carb came from O'Reilley and was for a 1979 Pinto with the 2.8. It cost me $169.
I also built a Top End Oiling kit like they used to build for the 427 FE engines. That kept oil flowing to the top and I had no more galled rockers or shafts.
Thanx for the input. I'm gonna have to milk it along for awhile now while I get some cash together. I pulled the accelerator pump off the other day to see if it was dried out or cracked. It was fine but when I put it back on it stoped working. I have to wait until tuesday afternoon for the new one to arrive. Then I can keep dealing with the hesitation problem again.
