I'm building up a '84 F-150 mudder using the stock running gear with a 351W,auto tranny and 33's. The original running gear was a 300 and a 4 spd granny tranny. Whats the possibility of having posi trac? Not to sure if I have a 8.8 or 9. Is there anyway of adding posi trac like a aftermarket conversoin kit? I plan on using spools because it'll never see asphalt. Also will my axles hold this set up up? Also, is it best to keep my radiator up front or in the bed?
Look up the "wavetrac"
My '84 has a 9" with 31 spline from factory (but I dont know if it's just an Australian thing) and that's what the wavetrac is available in. They also come with an amazing warranty
If you are going to use it as a mud truck that will never see pavement or the street, then put in a spool in the axels. For that kind of competition you can get away with a
spool in both the front and rear axels.
I've found that on slippery surfaces, particularly on hills, that even an LSD can cause issues. If you try to turn the front wheels need to travel different speeds, so one of them will lose traction which is worse than having an open diff.
I've got an LSD in mine, and I find in the paddock on wet grass that if I try to turn to go up hill I have to do it really gently or it'll just slide front down.
I guess it depends on your application. The only time it'll be an issue is when you need it least
