i have a 2001 f250 7.3, 8'' lift. i have a slight clank/thudding in the front end. the noise only seems to happen when i let off the skinny petal as im slowing down. the noise disapears when i am accelerating or driving down the road with the cc set. the noise started when i put my new winter tires on the truck (yokohama geolander i/t). i have taken it to three different shops today and no one seems to have any idea what it is...... ANY GOOD IDEAS WOULD BE GREAT!!
UPDATE: I lifted the rear driver side to get the tire off because i could smell the brake getting hot. While i had the truck up in the air i got under it to c if there was any give in my universals, they all seem fine but when i spun the drive shaft back and forth i found that my noise was coming from the transfer case. has anyone had a similar issue, the noise is a thud when i do it by hand
I've never had T-Case problems, but I had a hard clunk/thunk when at highway speeds when I let off or got back on the go pedal,it turned out to be a broken spider gear in the rear diff. Also while at highway speeds if not gassing on it,but not completely letting off I would get a vibration...
I took the truck to the Ford dealer, they didnt find anything wrong. The mechanic said everything is in working order but he couldnt figure out what was making the noise. The t-case is fine, as well as tranny and engine. Has ANYONE ran into anything similar to this? Its not my spider gear but thanks for the input, that was one more thing to scratch off the list.
i have a 2000 dually and i get a clunk when i let of the gas in od it feels like the t case but also rear. i replaced all u joints and center thinking that was prob but still got it. i cant figure it out
i can feel the clank in the floor board on the passanger side. I have tried to pin point the noise for weeks now. i took it to the Ford dealer and they had the truck for 5 hours and couldnt figure it out, they hurd it clear as day too. ive pretty much given up on finding where its coming from, ill know when it breaks. if mine goes first ill let you know what it was lol
Alot of people have found that a "clunk" in the floor boards is the track arm bushings and/or the sway bar bushings. But this can usually be felt when going over slight bumps while driving down road as well. Replace with urethane bushings. That could be a starting point.
Another option, although usually felt just when coming to a complete stop or just starting off is the slip joint in the drive line. Need to remove the rubber boot, grease it up the put the boot back on. There is even a service bulletin on this one.
I would also, even if just for safety's sake, check all lug nuts on the wheels, with the wheel off the ground.
Check the shock mounts too. Make sure they aren't loose. Although that would of shown up before you had your tires replaced.
Any other symptoms? Pulling to one side or another while driving, accellerating or stopping?
check your leaf springs, i had a broken leaf that sounded like that, well combine the broken leaf with a shot pinion bearing. Also with the lift you will want to check over all the steering and suspension parts.
Are the new tires on the same wheels or differnet ones? proper lug nuts and tourque?
i know its a long shot but you could try to rock the rig with the brakes on and see it anything has excessive play in it...
I took it to a trans shop before the dealership, they were clueless. I check everything in the suspension about once a month. i thought it might be a broken spring also there is nothing visually wrong. the new tires are on different rims yes they have the right lug nuts and are torqued right. we got over a foot of snow here last night and michigan is horrable about plowing the roads, ill try rocking it with the brakes tomorrow.
I too am experiencing the same thing. After reading on here i thought it was the stabilizer bar/sway bar bushings. I changed them last week. While this did improve things, the noise is still there when i apply the brakes and usually right before it comes to a stop, but not always. Sometimes it is rather loud. Will be watching to see if anyone has a cure.
