Anyone tried a HID headlight conversion with DRL??
I have read the Xenarc HID tech article and it is basically a plug and play kit. I have a 97 Expedition with DRL (in Canada) and I have email Sylvania some question re Xenarc X2010 on Vehicles with DRL. They have given me a quite detailed response and I think the RDL runs on the high beam, I am attaching the reply they gave me and see if anyone has a solution for me.
The X2010 kit includes the high beam, and the HID as your low beam stays on when you use your high beams. So, you wouldn't lose your high beam when you install the X2010.
But the DRL function is another matter--you will have to evaluate if the DRL is on the HB or LB. 1) IF it is on the LB (low beam), then DRL operation will cause the HID LB to come on AT FULL INTENSITY - which is allowed on DRL. A caution is that with HID on all the time, the 1500-2000 hr life will arrive much more quickly. 2) IF it is on the HB, then we have a bigger problem: the system is set up such that the HID LB stays on when the HB is turned on (to prevent lag when the HB is subsequently turned
>off), so what will happen with DRL operation is that the HB will come on at reduced power, but the LB HID will come on at full power (since it is relay triggered, and the lower voltage will still trigger it). The result will be out of spec for DRL due to two beams added together. I would advise against this.
hope i can help. if you park you exp. aimed at a wall or garage door and with the key in run so DTL's are on then switch the headlights on(make sure yourhi-beam switch is in hi-beam possition) you will notice the beam level does not change but the intensity does. hence the DTL's are hi-beams at a reduced voltage. now with the HID conversoin i think what you will end up with is DTL's at full power on high beam. not good for on coming traffic i think! but there might be some salvation. if you dont live in Canada there is no current law requiring DTL's. And there just so happens to be a recall on some production runs on DTL's on exp's. the dealer can deactivete them. now if yous is not included in the recall you might still get them to do it or tell you how. with the DTL's deactivated you should get normal headlight operation with the HID conversion. again hope it helps and if i'm wrong on any accout i hope someone else can pick it up.
Thanks Stang, but I live in Canada and DRL is mandatory. I am thinking if I can wire the DRL to light up the fogs (like the 2003) and somehow bypass the DRL for the headlight so I can have the headlight like the US spec Exp.
