I am working on my DIY coolant filter setup. Thanks Gashog390 for the tip to get the filter base ar Summit. They also have a base (#TRD-1045) that has horizontal in/out ports. I ordered that one as I was worried about running out of vertical space in the small area where the filter will go.Thanks to the advice of the members here, I have a shopping list of the plumbing parts to buy locally. All this got me to wonder about the main reasons for the extra importance of clean coolant in these 6.0 motors. As I understand it the main trouble areas are water pump failure and EGR cooler plugging. So......why is it not possible to back flush the EGR cooler? There should be some way to force water backwards and remove at least some of the sand and other debris, especially if it was done as maintenance and not after completly plugging. Gut feeling tells me that there isn't or you guys would be doing it. Just wondering what that reason would be. Glad to have you all guiding me down this learning curve!

Um, the problem is oil cooler plugging and then blocking flow to EGR cooler, then causing it to fail from a combo of extreme heat and also "flash off" boiling of coolant, leaving debris behind.
You would have to backflush both.
Ford came out with VC-9, a boiler cleaner, for this job.
O.K. thanks for the clarification, Gearloose1. I aquired this 03 just this year with no service records. Do you recommend doing the vc9 flush on the motor now? I have 10600 mi. 2003 f250 6.0 4w4 C.C. No problems yet that I am aware of. Just trying to do the maintenance chores that will help it last longer. dd
Due to the construction and the buildup that occurs back flushing/cleaning the oil cooler doesn't do any good. You just can't get the chemical into the passages to clean it on a badly clogged oil cooler. You're much better off replacing it instead.
