Yes, I had the head unit replaced with an after market stereo because the original would occasionally cut out. The new stereo worked fine for about 1 week and began to do the same thing. I took it back to the installer and he found that it was a problem with the factory amp, but he didn't know where it was located. Rather than run all new speaker wire, I would like to just bypass the factory amp.
did you put the radio in yourself?
if you did, what kind of plugs did it take?
if it took RCA plugs (red and white) then there is an amp connected
if its plain speaker wire going into a screw terminal or spring terminal or something, then there is no auxiliary amplifier.
in order to bypass the factory amp, you would need to run wires from the spring terminals behind the radio to the speakers.
you cant use the RCA plug connections to power the speakers, as they are 2V - 5V outputs and put out maybe 0.1W max
when you say its cutting out, does the radio lose power, or do the speakers cut out with the radio still on?
do all speakers cut out or just one?
we need more info.
I had the unit installed, and it uses a modular plug, not an RCA jack.
When it cuts out, the unit remains on, but the sound is lost in all 4 speakers.
This is an intermittent problem that seems to come and go without cause. For example, it has gone from working to not working overnight without moving the truck. It has never changed from working to not working or vice versa while the radio is on. The only other item is that when it is not working I can hear a brief pop from the front left speaker when I start the truck (whether or not the radio is on).
Bad ground somewhere? Or an aftermarket amp installed, fed from speaker wires powered by a keyed ignition source. Could be (and sounds like) maybe an amp that is overheating. Look under dash and seats for a amp!
