Well I'm getting farther. Went with the D3AE heads, air passages were NOT drilled. So i ground down the thermactor humps and cleaned up the rest of the exhaust port. I went with the CL32-421-8 comp cams hydralic roller kit, and there recommended valve springs. Going to use stock 400 crank, pistions, and connecting rods with ARP rod bolts and oil pump shaft. compression ratio should be 8.4:1 - 8.5:1. Didn't want to go with 9.3 to 1 tmeyer pistons. Compression was just a little high for some of the crappy gas around were I go. sometimes i can get 93, other times it might be old 87.
Need to set down and see how much your gonna invest in your heads. Talk to your machine shop and get some serious numbers on pricing then look at whats available. way the pricing difference and make the decision on oem or aftermarket. You will get a modern combustion chambered heads and porting exceeding your OEM specs. Old iron will work but their are some things to do to get the most out of your OEM heads. I like OEM heads but requires some work. either way you'll be good and I run OEM heads but I do some fine tuneing on ports and combustion chamber. OEM heads don't like much over .520 lift especially with factory springs. so your gonna need to find out what you got. sometimes your retainer clearance to guide can be a issue with bigger cams. just more stuff to think about when your sleeping!!
I'm going with the D3AE heads have already cleaned up the exhaust side, and thermactor humps. Had aftermarket valves and retainers from previous rebuild. Heads are done and cost 450.00 for labor and new Comp springs to match cam.
