Wow, this thread has taken a turn for the worse...

Let me restate...

"I truly appreciate the usefulness of my pole." No... that doesn't work either...

"I can always rely on my pole." Ummm...

"I can always grab my pole when I need to." Nope...

I give up...

Forget the Pole...
Forget the Manstep...

1. Step... aka Bumper

2. Pole... aka Tailage closed and used as a handle and right into the bed

3. Equals ... Nice flat tailgate with no future rattles. You know the saying...KISS

My equilibrium is not what it used to be so I find the pole and step real handy getting in and out of the bed of the truck.. Used to be I could walk a 12" I beam 500' from the ground and drag a welding lead along with me, but those days are long gone!!!

So the pole and anything else that I can get ahold of is to my advantage... I-BEAM

Rear tires are a good step too.
I usually use a tire to step into the bed and the bumper to exit the bed.

Oh yeah... I forgot the tires. I use these as a step at the boat ramp.

I really like that mod. I see how the step and pole can be usable, but usually I'm in and out of the bed quicker then I could get it out - although must admit I've had a pulled muscle a time or two. Besides looks the main advantage I can see in removing it is for people who load a lot of pallets or plywood/sheetrock. It provides another obstacle you have to lift over. For that matter the caps on the fifth wheel prep package are a real nuisance as well

Yeah, I used the tires as a step in and out all the time until a couple of years ago when my body stopped wanting to do that without complaining....

And I can't regardless on my '11 because it has a topper on 90% of the time, to make it an F350 Lariat Excursion.

Joe, who used to be able to climb into the cab without using the running board too.

No worry there. I'm short so I use the handy running boards to get in the cab every time. It's harder to step up to the cab with those installed than without. I also have to use that fancy front bumper step to check my oil and hope to not fall off when the dipstick finally gives.

They already put cup holders in dirty/dusty lawn garden tractors so you never know when there will be a spot in the tailgate.

Like Tom, but 30 some years older, I use my step and pole to avoid further aggravation of existing problems sustained during 40 years of construction work...no skirt or dress here...
