12 volt vs 24 volt Winch

I have the dual alternator, dual battery 6.7 and was wondering if anyone has installed a 24 volt winch? If yes, what did you have to do to support the 24 volts?

I have a 12V winch inside a trailer that we use to pull stuff up the ramp and inside with. It's a Warn and it's a big one (12K or larger). That thing will pull incredibly hard so I'm not sure what a 24V winch would do. Seems like a lot of power that is not so much needed.

If you go with 24v, wouldn't it need it's own power system? The alternators are 12v and the dual batteries are wired in parallel. I don't know how you could get 24v out of the truck, but of course I'm no electrician either.

2 more batteries wired in series, 24 volt charger (there are marine versions available), inverter large enough to power the charger (again marine version). Seems like you'll also need to through in a bed tool box too for the extra batteries, charger and inverter.

I'd say your looking at about $1500 before you buy the winch

It comes down to cost, and why you want / need another subsystem on your ride to maintain.

Do you have PTO ready option? Hydraulic Winches are better if you have a way to run them.

Don't need a PTO for that. We put a power steering powered hydraulic winch in a buddies F-250. That was an awesome winch, complicated compared to two battery cables, but it could pull the frame out from under the truck!

I always wanted a hydraulic winch...The Mile Marker was my choice..but I had heard that they make the power steering pumps wear out fast.

I have the PTO option, but it seems like it would be more expensive and a pain. I think I'll just go with the 12 volt version.

Definately more expensive and more of hassle to setup. But thats probably what I'll do on my truck.... eventually.
